Barr Clan Enjoys Hot Fishing After Snow Storm Passes
BY DAVE SHEA
Two generations of the Barr Family have been gathering for several years to fish the St. Lawrence Valley Sportsmen's Club Walleye Derby. All hands are on deck and on the water at midnight for the official season opening.
On Friday night the "Barr Bunch" encountered a new experience when they had to shovel snow out of their boats to fish.
But their experience at the weigh-in at Hosmer's Marina was very familiar.
Headed by a 1-2 finish of Zach Barr (top picture below) 10.6 pounds and Derek Barr at 8.7 pounds Barr clan produced 11 of the 16 Walleyes entered in the derby which returned after a one-year hiatus forced by the COVID-19 pandemic.
"The snow had stopped by midnight and it was pretty nice but by 3 a.m. it was really cold," said Zach Barr who landed his first place fish five minutes into the first troll before his boat mate had even got a line in the water.
Zach Barr claimed the first prize of $200, Derek Barr took second place at 8.75 pounds for $100 and 81-year old Ike Strader (bottom Photo below) braved the frigid elements and took third and $50 with a 9.73 pounder and broke up the Barrs' domination of the leaderboard.
"We were happy to be able to have the derby this year and we had 45 entries. The weather had a lot to do with a lower number than in the past. We had 16 walleyes entered with some really nice fish." said Greg Denny of the St. Lawrence Valley Sportsmen's Club.
"The weather really cold but a lot of guys reported that they caught a lot of fish. The money raised will go to our walleye stocking program. The eggs from this year's harvest are hatching now and the fry will be moved to the stocking ponds in Waddington tomorrow or Monday. We hope to have the walleye in the river in July to help keep this going."
The St. Lawrence Valley Sportsmen's Club will hold its Smallmouth Bass Derby on the third Saturday in June back at Hosmer's Marina.
"Pepsi Cola will sponsor our bass derby again so fishermen can enter by buying Pepsi products." said Denny.
"I am sure it will be warmer for the bass derby."
