BY STEVE HEATON
LAFARGEVILLE - It took 10 starts into the racing season but Heuvelton's Tyler Bushey and his crew of the X15 Black Pink Panther to break through for a first Pro Stock victory at the 1/2 mile oval at Can Am Speedway in LaFargeveille. Bushey raced past Track Champion Mike White of Winthrop on the final night of points and Sid Harmer Jr from Hailesboro in a field of 18 cars, the second biggest field of the season.
And it came on the second anniversary of his grandmother, Ruth Bushey's, passing and just three weeks after the funeral of his Brockville crewmate and high school friend Cody Holland who passed away on Aug 7.
"It was a long time coming but our crew's hard work finally paid off." said Bushey.
"We had some bugs early in the season and we went to address some of them in Albany where Nick Stone Motorsports, who built the car, resides on the July 4th weekend. We were going to race there that weekend but race cancelled it but we got some quarks worked out and we started seeing results. I just raced like it like I race at Brockville and left everything out on the track tonight."
In the 20 lap feature, Bushey who started on the inside after winning the heat by more than four car lengths, elected to take the outside just two laps in after a caution.
"I just felt real comfortable on the outside and the car had grip and it was fast out there. Last week, it was a tough track placing seventh. I definitely had someone watching over me tonight," Bushey said speaking of his friend Cody and Gram Ruth and grandfather Walt "Waldo".
In the feature, Bushey led every lap of the and his win was dominant after dodging a three car battle on turn one of the third lap. Bushey fended off White who placed second by over six car lengths on turn four in the final lap. White finished with an unofficial 480 points on the season and took home the points championship. He ran neck to neck most of the evening with Harmer Jr. who missed several races this season due to work obligations.
Bushey finished with 462 points unofficially for second and Ward Burton was third on the season with 444 points.
Last week, Bushey's seventh place was his second worst finish of the year to a 10th in the opener way back on June 5.
Bushey placed fifth on June 12th, June 19th, and July 24th. He took fourth on July 31st and grabbed third in races on July 17th, August 14th and August 21st and was very competitive in a second place finishes on August 7th.
