Canton Girls Gain Key Win Over Malone

BY KELSEA WHITTIER

The Canton Girls Basketball team won their second straight game at home dropping Malone 56-47 in NAC . The Malone Huskies started off slow with only four points in the first quarter. In the third quarter the Huskies put up 20 points and controlled the game.

In one other Central game on Thursday Gouverneur downed Salmon River 65-10

Canton 56 - Malone 47: Canton's Sarah Sieminski started off the scoring with a three-pointer to open the game and she continued to lead the team to victory with 17 points overall.

Canton hoped to play stronger defense on Thursday and the first half showed promising results. The second half mirrored the play of their previous game against Massena. Canton fell back on defense and allowed the Huskies to make a comeback coming within two points of a tie. Despite this poor defense, Katie Chisholm started the fourth quarter with two three-pointers and this momentum helped the team open the lead to 11 and close out the game.

Scoring for the Bears behind Sieminski was Chisholm and Lexi Huiatt each with 10 points. Big girls Gretchen Warner and Maddie Hoy each contributed six points.

Rounding out the scoring were: Kelsea Whittier (2), Ester Shipman (4) and Hailee Duvall (2).

Canton's offense was shaky at times, the team scrambled to take shots as the shot clocked ran out many times. The team hopes to improve on this as they will continue to face teams that will play a man-to-man defense similar to Malone.

Canton also hopes to hold up on defense throughout the game and allow their opponents to score less. Canton also found itself struggling with fouls and had five players with two or more fouls. This is another area for improvement for the team.

Although Canton continues to implement a more aggressive and risk-taking defense, they cannot resort to fouling.

Madison Ansarie and Leaha Gallager led Malone with 19 and 13 points.

Canton plays again on Saturday against Saranac in the SUNY Canton Roos House. The game begins at 7:30 p.m.

Gouverneur 65 - Salmon River 10: Raelin Burns, Shantell Sweet and Laney Smith combined for 14, 13 and 13 points as the Wildcats stayed undefeated on the young season. Cierra Besaw, Tori Salisbury and Kaitlyn Gibson all scored six points and Mikayla Douglass and Horne each added two points.

Tabor Iohseriioz (2 points) grabbed nine rebounds, Lindsay Martin scored four points and Kamea Thomas had 5 rebounds 4 steals  with excellent defensive effort for Salmon River.

"Gouverneur is very fast and beat us up the floor too many times for easy layups.    We need to work harder on that aspect. No rest as we head to St Regis Falls Tournament tomorrow and Saturday," said Salmon River Coach Sean Martin.
