Performing with cool precision under immense pressure, Ogdensburg's Chad Bruyere prevailed in a marathon sniper duel to win the Elks Club Soccer Shoot Area 1 (Northeast Region) championship for the 14 Under Division. The Northest Regional competition was held on Saturday at the Wild World of Indoor Sports at North Kingstown, Rhode Island and involved champions from seven states.
Winning the Northeast Regional title was the ultimate of the competition which does not go beyond the regional level. The Elks Club Shootout for the 12-Under and 14-Under divisions uses a Grid Goal Contest and consists of a full-size goal sectioned off so points can be scored when the ball is kicked into certain sections.
Another representative of the Ogdensburg Elks Lodge, Emma Wagers placed third in the Girls 14-Under Division.
Chad and Emma are both eighth graders at Ogdensburg Free Academy where they recently completed their seasons as members of the Boys and Girls Modified Soccer teams. Chad is the son of Chris and Vicki Bruyere and Emma is the daughter of Rachel Dishaw.
They reached the Northeast Regionals by winning a local contest hosted by the Ogdensburg Elks Lodge and advanced through competitions at Lowville and Booneville to return home for the state championships which were staged at OFA's turf field on Oct. 13.
In the Boys 14-Under finals Chad tied at 41-41 points with the Massachusetts champion after regulation where the competitors took 15 shots. In the first five-shot shootout they tied 12-12. In the second five-shot shootout Chad prevailed 16-9.
Chad Bruyere quickly shifted his shooting abilities indoors as an Ogdensburg Minor Hockey Bantam player.
"Awesome weekend with great kids Chad Bruyere won first place in the Area 1 Elks Soccer Shoot competing against six other states and Emma Wagers brought home a third place trophy. Amazing experience for these young athletes and super proud of both of them. A special thanks to their parents for dragging them all over the northeast for this experience," said Dick Powell who represented the Ogdensburg Elks Lodge with Stuart Rishe.
Powell is the past Exalted Ruler of the Ogdensburg Elks Lodge and Rishe is a Past State President of the Elks Club.
