M-W's Depth, Chateaugay's 18 3s Deny Challengers
Madrid-Waddington and Chateaugay took different avenues to meet stern challenges from Tupper Lake and Colton-Pierre in Friday's NAC East Boys Basketball action.
M-W (8-2, 12-4) used scoring from none players to down Tupper Lake (2-8, 5-10) 69-59 and undefeated and number one Class D state-ranked Chateaugay (11-0, 16-0) employed a very unusual three-man scoring line to defeat Colton-Pierrepont (1-8, 1-14) 67-48.
Chateaugay maintained a two-game lead in the division race while M-W held a one-game over third place Brushton-Moira (7-3, 11-4) which controlled Parishville-Hopkinton 67-43.
M-W 69 - Tupper Lake 59: "We struggled tonight. Tupper Lake outworked us and outhustled us. I hope this was a wake-up call," said M-W Coach Aaron Jones after the Yellow Jackets used a 21-15 fourth quarter advantage to pull away from a four-point lead.
"Eli Hulzer is a 6-3 or 6-4 sophomore and he really hurt tonight. He is going to be a very good player for them."
Eli Hulzer scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Tupper Lake upset effort which also featured 13 points from Jacob Stradley, 12 points from Eric Godin and eight points from Noah Varden.
Five players scored nine points or more for M-W led by 16 points and four steals by Kyle Stoner, a pair of 12 point efforts from Brennan Harmer (11 assists, 8 steals) and Jacob Morgan (5 rebounds, 1 assist), 10 points from Drew Harmer and nine points from Trent Lashua (10 rebounds, 4 steals).
"We battled to get the win and Jacob Morgan did a very nice job off the bench and gave us a big lift," said Coach Jones.
Other M-W scoring came from: Nick Beldock (2), Cody Beldock (4) and Sage Cordwell (4).
Chateaugay 67 - C-P 48: The Bulldogs prevailed by making 18 3-pointers to answer a unceasing attack at the rim by the Colts. Jonah McDonald (8 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals) buried 10 3s scoring 36 points in his explosive march toward the all-time Section 10 career scorfing record set last season by Declan Porter of Canton.
Walker Martin ( 5 assists, 6 steals) netted seven treys scoring 28 points in the first three quarters and Aiden Tan added one 3. Logan Secore contributed six rebounds and three steals and Silas Lewis passed out five assists.
"We did not bring the right energy and intensity tonight. Give Colton-Pierrepont credit they played really hard on both ends and were able to get a lot in inside baskets. We need to get refocused for tomorrow. Walker and Jonah shot really well from the outside and carried the load offensively," said Chateaugay Assistant Coach Jason LaPlante.
"Hats off to Coach Pike and his kids tonight."
Aiden Knight and Harlee Besio led the C-P effort with 19 and 12 points followed by Timmy Farns 8, Teddy Farns 5, Michael Schwartfigure 2 and Noah Rousell 2.
"Colton-Pierrepont played great team defense and attacked the rim offensively but was unable to compete with Chateaugay's 18 made 3's as a team. The tandem of Jonah McDonald and Walker Martin from behind the arc is just unreal to witness in person. Coach Martin either put them on the same side and made us pick one or spread them out on opposite sides and caught us out of position. Those two boys have no hesitation to pull up from NBA range either, and made more than they missed from that range," said C-P Coach Nate Pike.
"I am quite proud of my boys for how they just battled with the number one ranked team in New York State for Class D.
