Clarkson Downs SLU In Men's Hoop Opener
Liam McDonald, Jack Scotnicki and Brandon Arnold all scored double digits to lead the Saints, but the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team fell to Clarkson 77-63 in non-league play on Tuesday night at Burkman Gymnasium.
McDonald shot 5-for-9 from the arc and finished with a team-best 19 points, while Scotnicki went 6-for-15 from the floor for 17 points and Arnold finished with 13. Luke Hicks grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds, while Andy Downs tallied three steals and Carter Storey finished with six assists.
Clarkson posted an early lead over St. Lawrence, but the Saints managed to keep the Golden Knights within single digits for most of the first half. Back-to-back plays from Arnold brought the Saints within three points twice with just under four minutes to play in the half, but an 11-point run from Clarkson to end the half, lifted the Golden Knights to a 40-28 lead at the break.
The Saints were hot to start the second half scoring the first five points on plays from Arnold and Scotnicki, but the Golden Knights brought their lead back into the double digits and led by their largest lead of 24 points with 5:58 remaining in the game.
Despite only trailing by two points in the second half, the Saints were unable to overcome the first-half deficit.
"It was nice to be back on the floor after a long time off," said head coach Chris Downs. "We're grateful and happy to be back out, our team just got here in January, we're missing guys and we got started for a bit before we had to pause and it's just great to be playing again."
Jason Phelps led the Golden Knights with 19 points, while Blake Gearhart recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Reese Swedberg finished with 12 points and seven rebounds and Chris Hulbert added 10.
St. Lawrence recorded 18 points off turnovers, while the Golden Knights tallied 27 points off the bench.
Clarkson improved to 3-2 overall, well the Saints fell to 0-1.
St. Lawrence will host Wells College on Saturday, March 13 at 1 p.m.
