Clarkson Ladies Down SLU On Court
Sophomore Olivia Middleton scored 28 points and added four rebounds, four assists and four steals to lead the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team, but the Saints fell to Clarkson 69-64 in non-league action on Tuesday night at Burkman Gymnasium.
Middleton shot 11-for-18 from the floor and 4-for-8 from the arc for a team-best 28 points, while Sierra Sanson finished with 10 points and a team-best nine rebounds. Kristen Varin finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
The Saints got off to a strong start taking a 7-2 lead over the Golden Knights. St. Lawrence held the advantage through the first quarter and led 20-18 after the first 10 minutes of play.
Clarkson quickly tied the game 20-20 to open the second quarter, but the Saints went on an 11-2 run to take a 31-22 lead. Clarkson battled back to tie the game once again at halftime, 34-34.
A strong third quarter gave the Golden Knights an edge, as Clarkson outscored the Saints 21-11.
Clarkson quickly built a double-digit lead down the stretch in the fourth, leading by 14 with just under five minutes to play.
Middleton landed a 3-pointer and Sanson hit the next layup off a missed shot from Hannah Earl to bring the game within five. Two good free throws from Middleton allowed the Saints within three, but Clarkson's Carly Assimon shot 2-for-2 from the line for the win.
"We had an awful start to the third quarter with turnovers and missed shots and essentially that was the ball game," said head coach Dan Roiger. "We fixed our rebounding issue, but we broke down on defense, giving up easy shots. However, I thought the last 15 minutes we played really well, we had just fallen too deep into the hole at that point. Like the first game, this young team will grow and learn from their mistakes and be ready for the next one."
Molly Stewart and Maddie Pratt led the Golden Knights with 12 points each, with Stewart shooting 2-for-4 from the arc, while Lauren Bell recorded 11 points and Emma Buonanno grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds, Rachel Marion recorded seven steals and Elaina Porter of Gouverneur added four rebounds.
St. Lawrence shot 40 percent from the floor, while Clarkson shot 47 percent.
The Saints fell to 1-2 on the season, while the Golden Knights improved to 2-2.
