Colgate Downs Clarkson Ladies In Season Opener
A strong 2nd period from a veteran Colgate squad provide to be the difference as the Clarkson University Lady Knights fell 3-1 in their season opener to Colgate on Saturday at the Cheel Center.
All of Colgate's scoring came in the 2nd period as Kalty Kaltounkova netted 2 goals for the Raiders, who move to 3-0 on the season. Sammy Smigliani also scored for Colgate in the 2nd. The Knights out shot Colgate 20 - 12 over the two periods.
The Knights mounted a comeback in the 3rd period with an 8-4 shot advantage and were able to break through at the 17:24 mark of the 3rd, when Avery Mitchell netted her first goal of the season with an assist from Brooke McQuigge and Gabrielle David. Clarkson would get a power play to end the game and pulled their goalie for the extra attacker but time ran out as Colgate skated away with a 3-1 win.
Both teams were 0 for 3 on the power play. Marie-Pier Coulombe ended with 16 saves for the night.
The Knights will head to Hamilton on Monday to take on the Raiders. Game time will be 5 pm and can be seen on ESPN+/
