Cortland Blanks Potsdam On Senior Day

POTSDAM, N.Y.--- The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (3-12-1, 1-6 SUNYAC) fell to the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons (7-4-2, 3-2-1) 3-0 on Senior Day, Saturday afternoon. Three different players scored for Cortland. Bears sophomore goalie Conor Callan (Piermont, N.Y./Tappan Zee) finished with eight saves.

The contest was a defensive battle for the majority of the first half. Callan led the way for the Bears, racking up four saves early. Both teams saw few chances to score in the period, but Cortland gave themselves an opportunity with 10 minutes to go. Preceding a corner kick, senior defender Nevin Nambiar (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Herricks) nearly scored for the Red Dragons as his shot was just over the top. Freshman midfielder Anthony Ferrandino's (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) header from in front of the goal area off another corner kick at the 5:44 mark gave Cortland a 1-0 lead. The score was unchanged at the break.

The Red Dragons brought the pressure to the Bears early in the second half. After slowly wearing down the Bears defense, Cortland struck twice late to secure the win. At the 5:36 mark, freshman midfielder Riley Williams (Watertown, N.Y./South Jefferson) picked up a loose ball at the top of the box and scored with a drive into the left corner of the net. Less than a minute later, freshman Riley Burke (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) set up senior forward Sam Fuller (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) who closed the scoring with an instep kick.

Cortland freshman goalkeeper Braden Melveney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) had three saves for the win.

Prior to the game, the Bears honored the careers of seniors Esdras Juarez (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Tuckahoe), Wilber Parada (Huntington Station, N.Y./Huntington), Alejandro Callejas (Bayshore, N.Y./Brentwood), Brandon Igiehon (Dublin, Ireland/Channel View School), Teddy Bruschini (Wilton, N.Y./South Glens Falls) and Jeffrey Schulz (East Moriches, N.Y./Westhampton Beach).

Potsdam is back on the road next Friday for a meeting with the SUNYAC-leading SUNY Oneonta Dragons at 3 p.m.
