Cortland Downs Lady Roos

CORLAND – Alyssa Suzuki scored her first collegiate goal but the SUNY Canton women’s hockey team fell 5-1 on the road at SUNY Cortland in Northeast Women’s Hockey League (NEWHL) action as both teams opened their seasons on Friday evening.

Grace Schnorr opened the scoring at 7:59 of the opening period. Brooke Susac had a stellar opening period stopping 15 of the 16 shots she faced to keep the Roos within a goal after one period.The Red Dragons took control of the game with four goals in the second period. Cortland scored three goals on five shots in the opening 11 minutes, 10 second of the middle frame. Danny Donegan, Elena Eichmann and Quinn Metcalfe all lit the lamp for the hosts.Thirty-four seconds after Cortland’s fourth goal of the game the Roos responded when Suzuki recorded her first college goal off passes from rookies Caeley Smith and Emily Matthew.Schnorr added her second tally of the game at the 15:07 mark of the second period for the 5-1 final.Sirena Alvarez took over in relief between the pipes stopping 14 of the 15 shots she faced over the final 28:50.Chelsea Allain made 19 stops in the win for Cortland.The two teams combined to go 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.

The Roos visit Morrisville State in NEWHL action on Saturday at 2 p.m.
