CU Ladies Lift Hockey Streak To 10

The nation's longest unbeaten stretch extended to 10 games as Clarkson University held off Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon for a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Cheel Arena.

Ranked fifth in the national polls, the Golden Knight improve to 10-1-3 overall and are 7-0-3 since their last loss on October 5. Clarkson began its weekend non-league set against Mercyhurst (7-4-1) with a 4-1 victory on Friday.

The Green and Gold will resume ECAC Hockey play next weekend as they look to improve on their 3-0-1 conference mark at Princeton and Quinnipiac.

Clarkson led throughout against Mercyhurst, but survived a late flurry by the Lakers to come away with the one-goal victory. The Knights held a 37-23 shot advantage, including a 28-11 margin through 40 minutes.

Just eight second into a 4-on-4 situation, the Knights scored midway into the first period for the game's first goal.

After a Clarkson faceoff win, junior right wing Elizabeth Giguere (Quebec City, QUE) positioned herself at the right side of the Mercyhurst net and tapped in a perfect pass from the top of the left circle by senior defenseman, Captain Ella Shelton (Ingersol, ONT) for her 14th goal of the season and third of the weekend. Senior defender Taylor Turnquist (Blaine, MNA) also assisted.

After a scoreless second period, the Green and Gold made it 2-0 early in the third frame.

Senior Kayla Friesen (Winnipeg, MAN) set up the second goal with a crisp behind-the-net pass to Brooke McQuigge (Bowmanville, ONT) in the slot where the freshman left wing buried her third goal of the season at 7:46.

Mercyhurst pressured in the final minutes and got on the scoreboard with an extra-attacker power-play goal by Michele Robillard with 48 seconds remaining.

The Lakers thought they had the tying goal in the final second, when the puck crossed the goal line during a mad scramble in front, but the horn had blown and the Knights skated away with the victory.

Clarkson was 0-of-11 on the power play, while the Lakers went 1-of-6 with the man-advantage.
