Updated: Sep 16, 2019

OFA's Drew Costello breaks into the open in Friday's game at St. Lawrence Central

BRASHER FALLS - The lights went on for football at St. Lawrence Central on Friday.

But a lights out first half by visiting Ogdensburg Free Academy stole the show in the first game staged on the newly installed artificial turf of the Larries' Randy Riggs Field.

The Devils' defense recovered three fumbles and intercepted two passes, the quarterback duo of Jackson Jones and Michael Reed both threw touchdown passes and sophomore running back Tristan Lovely scored four touchdowns as OFA took a 42-0 halftime lead and climbed to 2-0 with a 42-7 victory.

The 0-2 Larries accounted for the only scoring of the second half when Ethan LaRock darted in to the endzone from six yards out after breaking free for 17 yards and Jarrett St. Hilaire kicked the extra point.

"Before the game we talked about how from the first to second game can be a time of a lot improvement for a team. I think we made some improvements. I think that we were definitely better than we were last week and we have to get better next week," said OFA Coach Matt Tessmer.

"And players who didn't play much last week got to play a lot tonight. So next week will be their second week and they will get a chance to make some improvements next week."

Senior quarterback Michael Reed was one of those players who flourished with increased playing time from week one. Reed entered the game after fellow senior Jackson Jones directed two scoring drives in the first quarter where Stephen Morley recovered two fumbles, Tristan Richardson covered a fumble and linebacker Owen Warchol intercepted a pass.

Lovely (11-73) scored on runs of of two, five and six yards in OFA's 28-point first quarter which also included a 25-yard touchdown pass by Morley from Jones who also threw a two-point conversion pass to MeSean Johnson.

Morley caught four passes for 60 yards in the first half and six different OFA receivers caught passes in the contest.

Jones also caught a two-point conversion pass from Ree, who scored on a one-yard run and threw a 29-yard touchown pass and a two-point conversion pass to Lovely in the second quarter. Harry Powers set up the first touchdown of the second quarter with an interception.

Jones completed six of seven passes for 75 yards and a touchdown and also caught a 31-yard pass from Reed who completed four of seven passes for 48 yards.

"It was good that Michael Reed got a chance to throw the ball tonight. Both quarterbacks played very well," said Tessmer who will lead his team to Canton on Saturday. Canton dropped a 40-28 loss to Watertown High on Friday.

"Our seniors did a great job setting the tone tonight. They gave us a lot of leadership," said OFA Defensive Coordinator Charlie McCormick.

The OFA defense also produced sacks by Luc LaFlair, Tristan Richardson and Aaron Ellis and a series of tackles for losses by LaFlair and fellow senior lineman Carson Barney.

The Larries also alternated players throughout the game and received a quarterback sack by Brady Benware and a 62-yard interception return by Jarret St. Hilaire.

The OFA JVs evened their season at 1-1 with a 20-6 nonleague win over Beakmantown.
