BY DAVE SHEA
There will be no championship banner for the OFA Girls Volleyball team which completed a perfect Fall II season at 7-0 with a 25-7, 25-12, 25-14 victory over Madrid-Waddington on Saturday morning.
But as far as Coach Sue McLean her Lady Blue Devils were definitely of championship quality and character.
"This is a legitImate championship team and to do what they did in a short amount practice time and touches was truly amazing. Normally we have a month of preseason and go to tournaments where we play 18 sets in a day. This group only played about 25 sets but they were definitely champions and they could have won my first Overall Section 10 Championship. They just don't make many unforced errors" said Coach McLean.
"And they way they put up with all extra things we had to do to because of COVID was outstanding. I was blessed to coach them when at first I didn't know if I wanted to coach when I saw the format. But nothing phased them. They took great joy in playing and were a very close team. I couldn't pick a better crew to go through COVID Volleyball with, they really learned to value the important things."
The Devils completed their seven-wins-in- 10 days-season as a study in consistency methodically winning long volleys with a much improved M-W squad which won its Senior Night on Friday.
"In the third set I left by five seniors (Emily Farrand 11 points, 6 aces, 4 kills, 3 digs 1 assist; Emma LeBeau 5 points 3 aces, 1 assist; Gabrielle Morley 8 kills, 7 points, 2aces, 2 assists, 1 dig; Jenna Mitchell 8 points, 3 aces, 2 digs, Jordyn Tupper 14 assists, 1 kill) and sophomore Abby Raven (17 points, 6 aces, 2 digs, 2 kills, 1 block 1 dig) out there for all the rotations. When we got to 20 I suddenly realized that this was the last time I was going to coach them," said Coach McLean.
"And I got emotional when I realized how much I was going to miss them."
Rounding out the effort were: Mallory Morley with three assists, one kill, two points; Taryn Sholette and Tristen Durrand with one point and one dig, Rose Pharoah one point and Aubrey Love with two points, one ace. Grace Hilborne rounded out the undefeated Blue Devil squad.
"We improved and we just have to keep working on the basics," said M-W Coach Troy Cruerer.
