Fast-Starting Devils Rebound For Volleyball Win
BY DAVE SHEA
Serving was A stumbling block for the OFA Volleyball team in its first NAC West Division loss at Potsdam on Tuesday.
On Wednesday the Devils used the serving of Emily Farrand as the springboard to a quick rebound in a 25-10, 25-17 and 25-15 NAC West victory over Gouverneur.
Farrand served for 10 straight points in the first game where the Devils jumped out to an 18-1 lead and she went on to record career bests with 29 points and 15 aces to go along with 3 kills, 2 digs and 1 assist.
"Emily Farrand was struggling in warmups so we got together andtalked about a few things to do and she went out and did them. We talked in warmups about putting our focus on serving and Emily said she wanted to lead off," said OFA Coach Sue McLean.
"So I put her first in our serving rotation and she stepped to the line and did the job."
In the victory OFA climbed to 6-1 in the West Division heading into Tuesday's 4 p.m. Senior Day Match against Madrid-Waddington.
Wednesday's match was the Devils' annual Serve for the Cure fund-raising game and all the proceeds went to Kick Cancer For Sami Curtis Foundation and the ranch which the foundation runs as place where cancer victims and their families can go for outdoor recreation and a place of rest.
"I told the girls about the foundation and Sami and they immediately wanted to support it. We want all the funds we raise to stay local," said Coach McLean.
"We started selling raffle tickets just two days ago and we raised $527. That made tonight's match very special."
Other contributions to the victory came from Rosie Jeneault with 5 kills, 6 points and 2 aces, Jordyn Tupper with 8 assists, Abby Raven with 3 kills, 2 points and 2 digs; Emma LeBeau with with 4 points, 2 aces, 1 kill, Jenna Mitchell with 2 points and 2 aces, Gabrielle Morley with 2 kills, 1 point, 1 assist; Celia Henry with 4 points, 1 ace, 1 kill and 1 dig and Melissa Barr with 2 digs and 1 point.
