Fitness Gyms Can Open Next Week; Inspections Needed

Gyms must have updated HVAC systems that comply with state standards and will have to be inspected by local governments within two weeks of opening.W YORK — Fitness gyms and facilities could reopen as soon as next week. After closing in mid-March gym enthusiasts can get back to treadmills and weight machines according to an announcement by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Monday.

According to the announcement gyms are able to reopen as soon as Aug. 24, but localities must open them by Sept. 2.

Localities must inspect gyms before they can reopen, or within two weeks of their reopening to be sure the facilities are meeting all the necessary criteria. Gyms must have updated HVAC systems that comply with state standards and will have to be inspected by local governments within two weeks of opening.

Local health departments must inspect facilities before or within two weeks of reopenings to make sure guidelines are in place.

Gyms are limited 33 percent capacity, and masks will be mandatory at all times when in the facilities. Users must sign in and out so contact tracing can be implemented if there’s a spread of the coronavirus.

The governor did not say when movie theaters across the state can reopen.

“Gyms — for more New Yorkers — are more essential than movie theaters," said Cuomo.
