Gosling's 3 Goals Lead SLU Ladies
Julia Gosling scored three goals and added an assist to lead the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 5-1 win over Dartmouth in an ECAC Hockey contest at Appleton Arena on Saturday afternoon. Gosling scored the Saints' first three goals of the game for her first career hat trick. Shailynn Snow added a goal and two assists for the Saints, who bounced back from a 2-1 loss to 10th-ranked Harvard yesterday. "We were able to get off to a good start in the first with a couple of nice goals," said Saints' head coach Chris Wells '92. "Dartmouth came hard all game and created some zone time and chances. Lucy Morgan kept good control of her rebounds and our power play was good all weekend. Even on the ones we didn't score we created chances and momentum. It was a good win as all points are at a premium this time of year." Gosling got the Saints started with a power play goal less than five minutes into the game. Kayla Vespa started the play, passing the puck behind the net to Anna Segedi, who fed Gosling, who redirected the puck just inside the left post. Gosling scored her second goal of the game late in the first on a gorgeous sequence with her linemates, Vespa and Shailynn Snow. Snow skated across the blue line with Vespa trailing. Snow dropped the pass to Vespa, who in turn backhanded a drop pass to Gosling between and circles, and Gosling one-timed the puck past Dartmouth goaltender Kayla Wormsbercher to give St. Lawrence a 2-0 lead. Jennifer Costa cut the Saints' lead to one early in the second period, as the Big Green's Catherine Trevors picked up an errant pass in the Saints' defensive zone and Costa cut to the net and one-timed Trevors' pass into the left side of the net. Gosling restored the two-goal lead with her third goal of the game on a 5-on-3 power play halfway through the second, once again redirecting a pass from Segedi from point blank. Rachel Teslak also picked up an assist on the play. Snow scored off a rebound on a shot by Kalie Grant late in the second to give the Saints a 4-1 lead. Maggie McLaughlin also assisted on the play, causing a turnover on the forecheck as the Big Green was attempting to break out of their own zone. Brittney Gout capped the scoring for the Saints halfway through the third period, scoring on a rebound after Snow put two shots on net. Gosling picked up her eighth assist of the season on the play. Morgan made 24 saves for the Saints, while Kayla Wormsbecher stopped 30 shots for the Big Green. The Saints were 2-for-6 on the power play and killed both of Dartmouth's power play opportunities, running their streak of successful penalties killed to 24 in a row. St. Lawrence improved to 10-10-5, 5-6-2 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Big Green fell to 5-13-3, 2-10-3. The Saints go on the road next weekend to face Colgate and Cornell.
