Gouverneur Debuts Under Coach Free At Lisbon

GOUVERNEUR - John Free began his tenure as Gouverneur Central Varsity Boys Basketball Coach with a wholesale revision of his preseason plans

For the best of reasons/

Members of his team were part of Gouverneur's historic run to the New York State Class C Championship game in football.

The Wildcats will make their season opener on Friday meeting Brushton-Moira in the first round of the Lisbon Tournament. Lisbon and Hammond will play in the other first round game of the tournament which concludes on Saturday.

Free took over the Gouverneur program after coaching Heuvelton's modified team last season. The Wildcats feature a 10-man roster of: Brock Cox, Garrett LeClair, Connor Wood, Carter Simmons. Cayden Stowell, Caden Storie, Stanlee Durham, Gavin Simmons, Xander Dawling and Michael Johnson.

"The program has struggled in recent years and we are looking to start completely over. From the way we practice to the way we warm up and all of our game preparation. We have a very young and athletic group with only two seniors," said Coach Free.

"I think will be able to compete in the very competitive Central Division this season. We know OFA and Canton have set the standard in the B division for the past 10 years and our goal as a program is to be able to compete with them and hopefully bring back a Section 10 Championship in the near future."
