Gouverneur Girls Edge OFA In Key Central Matchup
GOUVERNEUR - Monday's meeting in Gouverneur between the host Wildcats and OFA was extremely important for both teams' aspirations in the NAC Central Girls Basketball race.
Both teams came in with one loss in Central play and looking to stay one game back of Canton which is undefeated in league play.
The game in Gouverneur played out to expectations of an intense, physical contest and the Wildcats (5-1 NAC, 8-3) claimed a 35-33 win before a large and involved crowd with the decision decided by an inside conversion by Shacoria Jackson with 1.6 seconds to play.
"We played good defense the whole game and rebounded well but we got hurt by foul shooting again. We went 7-24 at the foul line," said OFA Coach Doug Loffler after his Lady Devils slipped 3-2 in league play and 4-3 overall headed into a home game with Canton on Thursday.
"At the end of the game we just didn't box out on the weak side and their girl got the rebound and put it in. It was a very tough game."
The game-winner was Jackson's second field goal of a four-point effort which featured 14 rebounds and four blocked shots. Laney Smith buried four 3s leading the winning offense with 12 points and Raelin Burns scored six points. Rabbit Sweet added four points with four rebounds and six steals.
OFA's inside oriented offense was led by Hailey Reed with 10 points and nine rebounds, Riley Hough with seven points and 14 rebounds and Gabrielle Morley with 10 points and eight rebounds.
"OFA is a very physical team. They are bigger than us and have a very good inside game. We struggled against their zone pressure but I thought in the fourth quarter, we were able to push the ball down the floor and get out an run a little more than we could in the first half, which enabled us to make a comeback," said Gouverneur Coach Sean Devlin.
"We had to overcome some early foul trouble and some late key injuries, but our girls, as young as they are, were able to overcome that and find a way to win with less than 2 seconds left. This was a key win for us."
Emily Farrand with five points and Abby Raven with one rounded out OFA's scoring and Gouverneur countered with three points by Cierra Besaw and two from Ellen Baer, Torie Solisbury and Kaitlyn Gibson. Lexi Devlin added three rebounds,
