Gouverneur Stays In Title Chase With Win Over Massena

Updated: Oct 4, 2019

A clutch 1-0 victory over Massena on Monday continued the NAC Central Division Girls Soccer title drive for 6-1-1 Gouverneur.

"The first half was all Massena. They dominated on the loose balls. In the

second half we adjusted and played better and started to control the middle and get

more shots and opportunities which led to our only goal," said Gouverneur Coach Mark Martin.

"The second half of the season is underway with some big games coming. We are

on a The way with big games coming up starting at Canton Tuesday which will be tough. Canton has top players like Jenny Haycook , Abby Dent and Hannah Reed who are all Section X select players who can play the game.  They play a deep sweeper and hopefully we can penetrate. We are near the Top of standings mid way point of season but still lots of work to be done .  I still believe Potsdam has the best team even with out there Top Key player Katie Cowan who is out for season."

Coach Martin looks for defense to be the Wildcats' anchor heading into the stretch run of the season.

"Our defense is still our team's anchor with Halie Simmons, Leeane Barbarito, Jade McIntosh, Elaina Lumley and Last years Defensive MVP Laney Smith still at her best. Shaqoria Jackson in goal has been solid all year. Definitely a different style without Ireland Martin in the middle any more but the team has adjusted well.  I am very proud of our Entire program. We have come leaps and bounds over the last few years," said Coach Martin.
