Hall of Fame Coaches Share Stories, Insights

Updated: Jul 24, 2019

A group of the North Country's most successful high school coaches in Potsdam's Steve Knack, Canton's Jerry Hourihan, Massena's Tom Miller, General Brown's Brian Nortz and OFA's Bill Merna gathered recently to share stories, insights and just catch up and laugh. "As a coach you never stop learning and these coaches whether I was coaching with them against them or in summer camps gave me valuable information that I used through out my 46 years of coaching. I want to thank them and appreciate what they have given to other coaches and most important there players," said retired coach Bruce Tallon, on Facebook, who enjoyed one of the area's longest basketball careers coaching at Long Lake, OFA (assistant), Hammond, Mater Dei College, St. Lawrence University (assistant) and SUNY Canton.

This group of retired high school basketball coaches met recently with enough knowlege to fill a Library. In front are Steve Kmack of Potsdam and Gerry Hourihan of Canton. In back are Tom Miller of Edwards-Knox and Massena, Brian Nortz of General Brown and Bill Merna of OFA. Knack, Hourihan, Miller and Merna are all members of the Basketball Coaches of New York Hall od Fame and Nortz now serves as General Brown Athletic Director.
