Early Scoring Runs Lift Hammond, M-W

DEKALB JUNCTION - Hammond broke out to a 17-3 first quarter lead and it proved decisive as the Red Devils gained a 52-37 win at Hermon-DeKalb on Tuesday night in NAC West Girls Basketball action. Kelsey Bennett scored 10 points in the first quarter and went on to score 21 points with five 3-pointers and eight rebounds.

"We got into a big hole in the first period and you can't do that against a Shawn Dack coached team. Hammond played very hard and they shot the ball well and rebounded well," said H-D Coach Jake Rowley.

"We worked hard but we just are having trouble scoring the ball. We will just keep working hard at that. Bella Marcellus gave a nice lift off the bench. She worked extremely hard was a big part of our defense when we we able to slow them down some."

Kiley Vaugh delivered 16 points and nine rebounds and Sadey Spabary (4 points) and Alyia Crosby (2 points) also controlled nine rebounds. Rounding out the scoring were: Jordan Kloepping (1), Hailey Cunningham (5) and Caitlyn Cunningham (3).

Hilary Jones led Hammond hitting four 3-pointers in a 14-point outing with 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals. Bri Grant buried three 3s scoring nine points with four rebounds and Audra Tehonica added four points. Rounding out the H-D scoring were: Jordyn Whitton (2), Emery McQuade (3), Hailee Bouchey (2) and Mattie Brabaw (3).

In one other NAC West game Edwards-Knox downed Harrisville 61-36.

Madrid-Waddington climbed to 3-0 in the NAC East with a 49-26 win over Colton-Pierrepont while Parishville-Hopkinton dropped Tupper Lake 34-25 and St. Regis Falls shaded Brushton-Moira 39-37.


Madrid-Waddington rendered a strong defensive effort and anchored its win over C-P with a 16-2 second quarter run. Alexis Sullivan scored 16 of her 18 points in the first half leading the Yellow Jackets, Lily LaMere came through with eight points, Anna Brady netted seven and Jaelynn Uppstrom and Grace Plumley each scored six points.

Rounding out the winning offense were: Lydia Thomas (2), Laney Tiernan (4) and Keli Kingston (2). Emma Clemmo led C-P with 17 points with eight in the first quarter and eight in the third. Other scoring came from Izzy Vacarro (3), Maura Richards (1), Jaeleigh Jacot (2) and Alexis Cuthbert (2).

E-K 61 - Harrisville 36: Abby Hart and Lucy Frary combined for 27 and 20 points for the Cougars followed by Dekota Matthews with seven, Rachel Vachez with three and Haily Matthews with four. Hannah LaPlatney and Tori Moore tallied 10 and seven points to lead Harrisville and Harlee Moore, Alana Luther, Bayleigh Spencer and Chloe Benson all aded two.
