Hammond, Morristown, H-D Win NAC West Softball Openers
Hammond and Hermon-DeKalb won mound duels at home while Morristown outscored Harrisville in a road game in Tuesday's NAC West Girls Softball openers. Hammond and H-D prevailed by 4-2 margins over Heuvelton and Edwards-Knox and Morristown downed Harrisville 19-9.
HAMMOND GAINS COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN
Hammond erased a 2-0 deficit with one run in the bottom of the fourth and three in the bottom of the fifth to gain the win over Heuvelton behind Sydney Tanner who struck out eight pitching a three-hitter. Heuvelton starter Chasity Johnson pitched five solid innings and Ally Trathen pitched a scoreless sixth in a six hitter.
All three of the Heuvelton hits came in the top of the fourth where Molly Williams, DaKota West and Carley Simmons singled to produce two runs.
The Red Devils answered with a single run in the bottom of the fourth where Hailey Cunningham walked, advanced on a single by Alyvia Crosby and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hannah Belknap. The Devils scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to gain the win.
Brooklyn Arquitt stroked a lead off single, Zoey Cunningham and Sydney Tanner singled with one out and Avery Kenyon came through with a two-out single. Landree Kenyon also singled for the Red Devils who received two double plays from Brooklyn Arquitt at firstbase.
"Brooklyn Arquitt had an outstanding game both batting and defensively with two double plays and our pitching-catching combination of Sydney Tanner and Zoey Cunningham was amazing tonight," said Hammond Coach Katina Dillon.
"Plus Sydney Tanner had the hit scoring the go-ahead run."
The Heuvelton coaches were pleased with the improvement their team showed from a nonleague season opening doubleheader.
"We played much better defensively today and put the ball in play. Chasity Johnson had a strong outing on the mound and Ally Trathen pitched a clean inning of relief," said HCS Assistant Coach Chris Showers.
"Sydney Tanner threw a great game for them and they had timely hits to produce runs."
MORRISTOWN SCORES OPENING DAY WIN
A six-run first inning got Morristown off to a smooth start of the season and Green Rockets presented first year varsity coach Megan Daymont an opening day win.
Morristown's pitching combination of Emma Showers (6 innings) and Karissa Donnelly (1 inning) produced three and two hits in the winning offense which was led by a four-hit outing from Kassidy Sullivan.
"I was very happy with the way we played after being off for almost two years. Emma Showers pitched very solid and really fought back when she had to," said Coach Daymont.
Mia Johnson and Emily Gagnon doubled, Rylie Showers stroked two hits and Kylie O'Donnelly and Emilee O'Donnell each added one hit.
Hannah Woodward lined a single and a double for Harrisville and Logan Smith singled twice.
GRANT STRIKES OUT 14 IN HERMON-DEKALB WIN
Bri Grant used 14 strikeouts to quell Edwards-Knox scoring threats as Hermon-DeKalb gained a 4-2 opening day win.
"Bri Grant got out of some jams and for a freshman Bailey Wright did a great job behind the plate. Hannah Gollinger got the season off to a perfect start hitting the first pitch of the game for a homerun" said H-D Coach Bob Bice.
"We played about as well as we could right now but we know we have clean some things up before we play Hammond on Thursday."
All of the runs in the game came in the first three innings. Rylie Hale singled in the first inning and scored on a double by Audri Tehonica and Bri Grant, Sierra Riley and Morgan Nolan all singled for the Demons.
Decoda Matthews pitched the first four innings for E-K and Kayleigh Allen tossed three scoreless frames. Haley Matthews singled and tripled for the Cougars and Lucy Frary, Hall, Cadey Wheat, Kayleigh Allen, Riley Typhair and Sophia Vachez singled.
