Hammond Soccer Teams Eye Strong Seasons

Updated: Sep 7, 2019

HAMMOND - The Hammond Girls and Boys Soccer teams both show the potential for outstanding 2019 season.

The Lady Devils will look to make a repeat run at division honors while the Hammond Boys look to make a forward move.

GIRLS SOCCER

The Red Devils finished just one game off the NAC West lead at 10-4 and are looking to make another strong run in the division led by four returning All-NAC West selections in junior Avery Kenyon and senior Kelsey Bennet who earned team honors and Second Team picks in juniors Nora Pease and Hailey Cunningham.

"If we can continue to share and work together we hope to be as good as we can be," said Coach Shawn Dack.

Kyley Vaugh and Brooke Manning give the Devils' two other poised senior performers and Arina Sola and Tori Martire are looking for solid junior seasons . The cast of underclass performers looking to make contributions are: freshmen Hannah Belknap, Natalie Howie, Zoey Cunningham, Hailee Manning, Sady Sprabary and sophomores Kiersen LaFlair, Caitlynn Cunningham, Madeline Rathbun, Alyvia Crosby and Lily Towne.

The Lady Devils will play at Harrisville on Wednesday and play General Brown in the Harrisville Tournament on Friday.

BOYS SOCCER

The Red Devils are looking to move up from a 5-7 record in the NAC West last fall and must replace the scoring leadership of First Team All-NAC West selection John Boland.

Coach Kevin Toland's team started 0-2 at the Indian River Tournament but turned in a strong effort in a 2-1 loss to the host Warriors in the consolation game.

The Devils held a 1-0 lead until Indian River rallied in the final four minutes.

"I was very impressed at the way the guys played. I just hope we can keep it up," said Toland who will look to three seniors and 10 juniors to lead the team and for sophomore Cooper Bennett to also step into a lead role at center halfback.

"We are going to play two strikers this season in a formation to strengthen us defensively," said Toland who will lead the Devils into a new NAC West season on Monday at home against Morristown.

Senior members of the team are: defender Luke Lundy , halfback Dawson Simons and striker Nate Jewett. The junior class features goalie Lucas McQueer, striker Randy Durhan, stopper Austin McCarty, midfielder Brandon LaRock, sweepers Logan Tate and Tyler Fleming, goaltender Brent Raymond and halfback Matt Hodgdon.

Sophomores Cooper Bennett and Logan Jones will both play in the midfield and another sophomore Kennan Gardner play in the defense.

The lone freshman on the team is midfielder Cody Howard.
