Hammond Sweeps Morristown Tourney Titles

MORRISTOWN - It was a Devilish day in Morristown on Saturday as the Hammond Varsity and Junior Varsity Girls Basketball teams earned convincing wins over the host Green Rockets in the championship games of Holiday Hustle Tournament.

Hammond won the varsity contest 84-17 pulling away in the second quarter with a 27-6 effort to break open a 15-6 first quarter advantage.

That followed up a 27-0 Hammond start in the JV game in a 77-9 win,

Lisbon won the consolation game in both JV and Varsity over Sacketts Harbor.

Hammond Varsity 84, Morristown 17: After leading 42-12 at halftime, the Red Devils cruised in the second half with 20-5 and 22-0 third and fourth quarter advantages.

"We hit a good stride. We are in basketball shape and ran well. We played fundamental defense and controlled the glass. We did lots of little things that don’t pop up in stats," said Hammond coach Shawn Dack. "

"Hailey Cunningham, Alyvia Crosby, Sadey Sprabary. Caitlynn Cunningham. Jordan Kloepping, Kylie Vaughanand Kelsey Bennett all did a great job".

All Tournament team pick Kelsey Bennett delivered a explosive 31 points for the Red Devils. Kylie Vaughn won MVP honors scoring a season high 14 points. Sadey Sprabury tossed in 13 while Hailey Cunningham and Caitlynn Cunningham scored eight and seven. Jordan Kloepping added seven while Alvia Crosby chipped in two.

Mia Johnson (4), All Tournament team selection Emma Showers (3), Hailey Ward (3), Carly Piercey (2), Kaitlyn Laidlee (2), and Riley Showers (1) all contributed in scoring for Morristown.

"We played solid for six minutes in the opening quarter but once Hammond got rolling we just didn't play well. Right now, we can't handle adversity when things aren't going right," said MCS Coach Stan Piercey.

Hammond JV 78, Morristown JV 9: Hailiee Manning exploded for 24 points and Tournament MVP Landree Kenynon pumped in 20 points. Natalie Howie scored 13 while All Tourney selection Zoey Cunningham (8), Ava Howie (7), Brooklyn Arquitt (4), Lily Towne (2) rounded out the winning effort.

Laurel Vinch (3), Marissa Fanery (2), Jacalyn Austin (2), and All Tourney pick Emily Gagnon (2) scored for Morristown.

Lisbon 48, Sackets Harbor 37: The Knights secured a rebound win after a league setback on Friday to Hammond.

"We had some good moments. And a win is a win.  Abby Flack generated 15 points going seven for nine at the foul line  and grabbed seven boards and Olivia McLear added 15 points," said Lisbon Coach Dicky Marcellus.

"At the line we did a solid job."

All Tourney pick Alexa McKee delivered 12 points while Kalie Wood (1), Ema Hitsman (1), Brooke Measheaw (2), Grace Snyder (1), and Karli Thompson (2, six rebounds) rounded out the scoresheet. Savannah Chiodi scored 17 points for Sackets Harbor and was named as an All Tournament team selection. Corinne Martin chipped in eight followed by six from Alyssa Coleman, five from Murielle Fedorko, and three from Sofia Gray.

Lisbon JV 43, Sackets JV 22: Lisbon opened to a 11-4 first quarter lead and sealed it with a 15-5 fourth. Marissa Robinson scored 10 points to pace the Knights. Grace Smith added seven points and nine steals while All Tournament team selection Gabrielle Taylor added six. Rounding out the points in the win were Jaylin Massia (3), Mikaela Buckley (3, 7 rebounds), Madison Parker (4), Eliza McLear (1), Rachel LaRock (4, 8 rebounds), and Riley Beldock (5, 9 rebounds, 2 steals).

All Tournament selection Lauren Sholette scored 13 for Sackets Harbor. Isabella Cuva (3), Natalia Gibbons (2), Rayne Peterson (2), Catie Lind (1) and Molly Miller (1) rounded out the scoring.
