Durant Looks To Guide Continued Heuvelton Success

HEUVELTON - After 13 years as the Boys Modified Soccer Coach at Heuvelton Central School, Bruce Durant has succeeded Dave Steele as the Head Varsity Coach.

Durant is extremely excited about following a tough act in Steele's career and the final season of that career where the Bulldogs won the NAC West at 11-1-0 and the Section 10 Championships last fall.

"I am looking forward to an extremely exciting season and following Dave Steele who did so many great things. Offensively we had a lot of work to do. Noah Steele and our exchange student accounted for 90 per cent of the scoring last year. We lost eight seniors," said Coach Durant.

"I am really happy that that will have scrimmages and a nonleague game against Gouverneur before we open our season against Lisbon on Sept. 9 which is a great rivalry."

Noah Steele, last season's NAC West MVP, rewrote the school scoring records and was one of four Team All-NAC West First Team selections to graduate along with Tanner Armstrong, Keegan Kelley and Jon Trathen."

The Bulldogs return a Second Team All-Star in sophomore goaltender Jed Crayford in what will be a young team with only two seniors in Gavin Barney who move into the sweeper role and defender Caleb Trathen.

Juniors Matt Basford (F), Andrew Demers (MF), Dustin Dodd (MF), Braeden Free (D), Jacob Martin (F), Gavin Murray (MF), Jordan Sawyer (F) and Josh Wrobel (Stopper) will all look to provide leadership.

The team's talented underclass corps features Chris Ashlaw (Fr MF), Evan Felt ( So F), Nate Mashaw (Fr D), Brandon Pray (Fr, F), Cole Rickett (So HB) and Hunter Venette (So MF).

The Bulldogs boosted their optimism by winning a scrimmage at St. Regis Falls 6-0.

Matt Basford netted a penalty shot and scored off an assist from Evan Felt who finished with two goals and one assist. Felt scored from Jordan Saywer and then set up a goal by Sawyer.

Hunter Venette closed out the scoring off an assist from Sawyer and Jed Crayford handled five shots in goal.

"We did a lot of good things and it was nice effort with school starting on Wednesday. It was a good way to get things started," said Durant.

Heuvelton travels to Gouverneur today.
