Heuvelton, Hammond Match Wins In West Softball Race
Hammond (5-0) remained unbeaten atop the NAC West Softball race and 3-1 Heuvelton stayed one game back in the loss column with matching well-pitched victories on Monday. Hammond downed Lisbon (0-6) 6-2 and Heuvelton gained a 4-1 victory over Edwards-Knox (3-2).
In NAC East action Norwood-Norfolk downed Madrid-Waddington 14, Colton-Pierrepont shaded Parishville-Hopkinton 9-8 and Brushton-Moira shaded Chateaugay 7-5.
Heuvelton 4 - E-K 1: Chasity Johnson struck out nine and backed by solid defense scattered nine hits in blanking E-K after the first inning. Dekoda Matthews struck out three in the first things for E-K and Cadey Wheat fanned six batters in the last four frames of a combined six hitter.
"All the pitchers threw well. We made a few mistakes which hurt and Heuvelton played very good defense," said E-K Coach Lori Brewer.
Molly Williams tripled and singled for Heuvelton and Chasity Johnson, Amber Cunningham, Rylin McAllister and Lily Spooner all came through with singles.
Kailyn Sroka lined a double and two singles for E-K, Lucy Frary singled twice and Cadey Wheat, Hailey Matthews, Dekoda Matthews and Leanne Hall all stroked singles.
"This was a great softball game by two good teams. We were able to get a couple of runs early on timely hits by Molly Williams and Amber Cunningham. Chasity Johnson really had her good stuff working and we made plays behind her. Lily Spooner had another solid game behind the plate and also a couple of nice at-bats," said HCS Assistant Coach Chris Showers.
"Coach Eliza Pierce talked about doing things correctly as a team and individually and today we did that. We still have things to work on but we are improving each day and that is all you ask for." Hammond 6 - Lisbon 2: The Lady Devils remained unbeaten behind pitcher Sydney Tanner and the Red Devils continued to produce runs with clutch hits. Tanner, Alyvia Crosby and Avery Kenyon all stroked two hits and Zoey Cunningham, Hannah Belknap, Brooklyn Arquitt and Jordan Kloepping. Olivia McLear, Grace Smith, Rachel LaRock, Emily Reynolds, Eliza Reynolds, Eliza McLear and Emma Hitchman.
Reynolds also supplied a solid complete game effort on the mound.
Norwood-Norfolk 14 - Madrid-Waddington 3: Madison Weaver struck out 11 pitching a three-hitter for the Flyers and KJ Belmore rapped two singles and two doubles to lead the winning offense. Kylee Kellison stroked three singles and Hannah Dominy stroked two hits. Shelly Vallance doubled and Madison Weaver, Sophie Lauzon and Chelsey Varney all added singled.
Lacey Sullivan, Megan Burwell and Adrianna Willard all singled for M-W.
