Heuvelton Looks To Ride Strength In Numbers, Depth

The Heuvelton Central Boys Soccer camp is a bustling illustration of what a difference one year can make.

Last year Coach Bruce Durant's Bulldogs featured only a cast of 16 which was short on varsity game experience.

As Coach Durant guides his 2020 team toward Friday's NAC West opener in Hammond he and Assistant Coach Bryant Wentworth are working with 26 players. Along with a strong returning cast featuring proven leaders the Bulldogs also received a boost in athleticism with a group of athletes who had previously played football through a merger with Canton.

Football, Girls Volleyball and Competitive Cheerleading have been designated as High Risk Sports and will be staged in a Fall II season which will begin on March 1.

"Things are going great and we are looking forward to a great season and a great future. We went from 15 or 16 players to 26 players. We can only dress 20 according the COVID-19 rules but we are going to involve everyone as best we can. The big thing I see is that the guys have a better appreciation of what they have after losing the spring season," said Coach Durant.

"And it is a big plus to have Bryant Wentworth as my assistant coach. He is a very good coach and with two coaches it is so much easier to get a lot done in practices. And the boys who previously football in the fall are learning soccer very quickly. Everyone is giving us 100 percent and doing a good job following the state guidelines."
