Heuvelton Rides Early Scoring, Perfect Close Past M-W

HEUVELTON - Heuvelton Central rode decisive strings of runs and outs to gain a key 6-3 home win over Madrid-Waddington in the NAC West Baseball opener for both teams on Monday.
After Matt Robinson and Logan Cordova of M-W scored as the first two batters of the game, Heuvelton plated its first five batter in the bottom of the first inning. HCS starter Adam Calton pitched four solid innings and Matt Basford came on and retired nine straight batters to close out the game.
"Matt pitched very well and the guys hit well. But we still have lots of work to do catching up on missed time," said Heuvelton Coach Dave Steele.
Matt Basford, Jordan Sawyer, Adam Calton, Jed Crayford and Brandon Pray all scored for Heuvelton in the first inning where Calton and Pray both delivered RBI singles. After the first inning, the M-W pitching combination of Brody VanBuren and Luke LePage allowed just one run.
Pray finished with two singles and two RBIs for Heuvelton with Calton also driving in two runs and Lucas Thornhill and Jacob Martin each stroking singles.
Logan Cordova singled twice for M-W, Matt Robinson delivered an RBI single and Luke LePage singled.
