Huskies Sweep Blue Devils In Central Soccer
BY DAVE SHEA
Frustration was an emotion shared by the OFA Boys and Girls Soccer teams in NAC Central Division Soccer games against Malone played on Monday to start the second half of the season.
In Malone, the Huskies reversed a 7-3 opening day loss to shade the OFA Boys 2-1 and under the lights of the OFA multi-purpose stadium the Lady Huskies prevailed 1-0 thwarting the Lady Devils' bid to record their first win.
MALONE BOYS 2 - OFA 1
Ryan Johnson scored the only goal of the second half on a long shot to give the 4-2 Huskies a win which dropped 5-2 OFA two games behind undefeated Canton in the race for Central Division honors.
In the first half Hans Schumacher set up Ben Monnett with a long pass and OFA countered with Kam Johnson scoring on a pretty three-way sequence with Cooper Garvey and Holden Woods.
"They put Hans Schumacher back in the midfield to help their defense. We did some nice things and played pretty well but at the end of the day we did not finish enough of our chances. We hit a few pipes and we gave up two goals that we probably should not have," said OFA Coach Matt Morley.
"Our goal came on a long service from Holden Woods and a head ball from cooper Garvey to Kam Johnson for the finish."
MALONE GIRLS 1 - OFA 0
Sweeper Claudia LaPlante answered a very consistent Malone defense which broke up several promising buildups by OFA created by one-touch passes.
"Tonight was the way it has gone all season. The girls played hard and worked hard and we had promising sequences all night. But we just couldn't break through. It looked like we were going to break through down the middle a few times but it didn't happen," said OFA Coach Doug Loffler.
Madison Ansari played the first half of a seven-save shutout shared with Taylor Covey and thenshifted into the midfield to boost the defense and offense. Ansari set up the only goal with a through pass to Riley Macaulay who used a nice cutback to create separation to drive a hard shot into the net.
The Devils created two chances in the final two minutes but a crossing pass by Brinley Frederick and a long drive by Saige Estes were both blocked and then cleared by defenders.
Emily Jo Sovie and Emma Chapman combined on eight saves for OFA.
MASSENA SWEEPS POTSDAM
In another Central Division boys game the Raiders (1-3) gained their first win and dropped Potsdam to 0-5 4-0. Jacob Bressard stopped eight saves in the shutout backed by a one goal and one assist from Shea Scully and single goals by Chris Masaro, Alex Abourjelly and Luke Greco.
In the girls matchup Potsdam (3-2) handed Massena (2-1) its first loss of the season.
Katie Cowen scored the lone goal of the game from Kennedy Emerson in the 22nd minute. Taylor Benda stopped nine shots in the shutout and Sabrina Cromie handled 12 saves for Massena.
