Lady Bears Down Roos In Boyd Jones Cup Game

CANTON.-It took 89:59, but sophomore forward Makenna Crosson (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) scored on a rebound to give the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (4-2) to a 1-0 victory over SUNY Canton (1-2) on Tuesday night. The Bears are now 9-0-1 in Boyd Jones Cup history.

Potsdam kept the field tilted in Canton's direction from the outset. The Bears peppered the Roos' defense with 16 shots and created six corner kicks in the first half. They allowed just two Canton shots, but still found themselves in a scoreless contest after 45 minutes. Roos goalie Victoria Hanna made five saves.

Potsdam was just as dominant in the second half with 19 more shots to Canton's one and seven more corners, but the Bears still struggled to get on the board. Hanna stopped 10 more shots in the half, but an 11th attempt decided the game. Just as the teams seemed headed to overtime, Bears sophomore midfielder Kristina Sanchez (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) fired a direct kick on Hannah. She made the stop, but Crosson buried the rebound with 1.2 seconds left to win the game.

Senior goalkeeper Delphine Léonard (Anjou, Quebec/Dawson College Prep) needed just one save to pick up her 17th career win and fifth career shutout. Hannah finished with 16 stops.

Potsdam had a 35-3 advantage in shots and 13-1 advantage in corners. Potsdam is 13-0-1 all-time against Canton, outscoring the Roos 41-2 in the process.

The Bears play their first home contest of 2019 against Utica on Friday at 4 p.m.
