Lady Bears Win On Second Half Goals
BUFFALO, N.Y.-Junior forward Lexi Dean (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) and sophomore forward Mackenzie Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) each scored in the second half to lift the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (5-4, 1-0 SUNYAC) to a 2-0 victory at Buffalo State (3-5-1, 0-1) in the SUNYAC opener on Friday afternoon. Senior goalkeeper Delphine Léonard (Anjou, Quebec/Dawson College Prep) made four saves for her fourth win of the season and her second shutout.
The play was even throughout the first half, with each team taking five shots. Léonard and Bengal goalie Taylor Carillo each stopped two shots. The contest was still scoreless at halftime.
Both teams ramped up the attack in the second half, generating a combined 21 shots and 10 corner kicks. The Bears broke through for all the offense they needed at 55:31. Sophomore midfielder Margaret Crosson (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) set up Dean's marker at 55:31. After two more critical stops from Léonard, Bowie scored in the 85th minute to ice the victory.
Carillo matched Léonard with four saves between the sticks. Potsdam outshot Buffalo State 18-14 and the teams finished with six corners apiece.
With her goal, Dean moves into sixth place on the program's scoring list and fifth on the goals list with 22 goals and 14 assists for 58 points. Bowie slides into 21st place on the scoring list with her tally. Léonard's victory was the 18th of her career, 10 shy of Sarah Casey's '10 Potsdam record of 28.
Potsdam heads to Fredonia tomorrow afternoon for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Blue Devils.
