Lady Roos Falls In Meagle Tourney Opener
Marietta, OH – The SUNY Canton women’s basketball team jumped off to an early six-point lead but Carnegie Mellon controlled play over the final three quarters to earn a 77-35 win on Sunday evening in the opening round of the Jim Meagle Tournament hosted by Marietta College.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Roos opened a 15-9 lead midway through the opening quarter after Autumn Watkins found Autumn Kunes for a three-pointer. The trey marked the third make from distance in the opening five minutes as Joie Culkin also hit a pair of threes. The Tartans closed the first stanza on a 8-0 run to lead 17-15 after one.CMU dominated play in the second 10 minutes outscoring the Roos 29-3 to open a 46-18 lead at intermission. Jeanna Manning’s three-pointer with 1 minute 13 seconds left in the half was the lone Canton basket of the quarter.Play was much closer in the third quarter with the Tartans holding a slim 13-10 advantage before CMU closed out the double digit win in the fourth.Culkin paced Canton with 13 points and added six rebounds. Kunes chipped in seven points and Shannyn St. Andrews added six points and a game-high nine rebounds.Sophi Chao and Laurel Pereira supplied 11 points apiece in a balanced Tartan attack, while Cameron Pitts added 10 points.
WHAT'S NEXT The women’s basketball team is back in action on Monday in the consolation game of the Jim Meagle Tournament when they square off with North Carolina Wesleyan College at 1 p.m. North Carolina Wesleyan fell 85-74 to host Marietta in Saturday’s opening game.
