Kayla Vespa scored her third goal of the weekend with two minutes and 19 seconds remaining in the third period to lift the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 1-1 tie with Robert Morris in a non-league game on Saturday afternoon at SUNY Canton's Roos House Ice Rink.
The senior alternate captain slapped at the puck after it fluttered down into the slot after a shot by Skylar Podvey was deflected by a defender. Julia Gosling also picked up an assist on the play to run her streak of consecutive assists on Saints' goals to six.
"It was another hard-fought game today," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells '92. "Robert Morris played strong and they were crisp again with their playmaking and passing. We were able to match their intensity better today and had more success because of it. This team continues to play relentlessly when behind in games and finds ways to come back for ties and wins. Overtime was exciting as both teams had great chances at each end."
Robert Morris took a 1-0 lead on with a power play goal on a 2-on-0 break in the second period. Emily Curlett wired a pass from behind her own goal all the way to the Saints' blue line, where Michaela Boyle received it. Boyle broke in on the net and passed it to her right to Sarah Lecavalier, who buried a shot high to the glove side.
Outside of the one goal, the Saints' defense and goaltender Lucy Morgan did well to shut down a Robert Morris team that had won seven straight games, including a 3-2 win over the Saints in the first game of the two-game series yesterday. Morgan made 29 saves, and the Saints blocked 20 shots, including six by Amanda Butterfield and five more by her pair on the blue line, Claire Dudley.
Raygan Kirk made 18 saves to earn the tie for the Colonials, but had to come out of the game with just 1:38 remaining in overtime due to injury. Arielle Desmet made one save in the overtime period.
The Saints will close out the fall semester with a pair of ECAC Hockey games next weekend, hosting Union and Rensselaer at Roos House Ice Rink at SUNY Canton. Opening faceoff for Friday's game against the Dutchwomen is scheduled for 7 p.m., while Saturday's matinee against the Engineers will be at 3 p.m.
