Lisbon Wins 14U Baseball Title
LISBON - Lisbon southpaw Jayden Williams' timing matched his effectiveness on the mound in Thursday's 14U Baseball Championship game against Massena.
Williams delivered his first complete game shutout at any level of baseball hurling a four-hitter in a 7-0 victory for top-seeded Lisbon..
"Jadyen Williams did a great job. Pitching a complete game shutout does not happen everyday," said Dave Gravlin who coached the team along with Darren LaRock and Rick White.
"We had an excellent season. I looked for the older guys to provide direction and leadership to the younger players. Our younger players followed that direction well and we did some wonderful things."
The veterans on the Lisbon team: Jayden and Trenton Williams, Issac LaRock, Collin Parmeter, Ben LaRock and David Pirie, were all members of a very young Lisbon Central varsity team which reached the New York State Class D Final Four.
Williams struck out six, walked four, stranded seven runners in the bases and cruised by constantly getting ahead of the hitters after Lisbon scored five runs in the second inning of the contest where neither team committed an error.
Williams snuffed a bases loaded threat with a third out strikeout in the fourth inning and Armando Lazaro's leaping backhanded catch at third stymied a potential Massena rally in the fifth inning.
Lazaro also went 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBIs to lead the Lisbon offense along with Trent Williams and Dave Pirie (2 runs) who each singled twice and Collin Parmeter who doubled and drove in three runs. Issac LaRock added a single to the win.
Brian Hurlbutt singled twice for Massena and Matt Richards and Caleb Lepage each added singles. Hunter Young pitched 5 1/3 innings for Massena which lost only to Lisbon in the summer season.
"We had several players who played at a higher age level in the past few years. Massena was younger team than us and had some little league players who did a nice job," said Lisbon Coach Dave Gravlin.
