M-W Boys, Girls Ready To Defend Soccer Titles
The Madrid-Waddington Boys and Girls will both be looking to defend Section 10 Class C Soccer championships in the 2019 season which opened on Thursday as the boys bested Norwood-Norfolk 3-1 in the John Jeffers Tournament in Potsdam.
The M-W Girls kick off a new campaign on Friday with an 11 a.m. home nonleague game against Harrisville.
The M-W Boys are also the defending NAC East Division champions after going 12-2-0 last year and then moving on to the New York State Final Four.
The 2019 YellowJacket soccer season looks to be very promising but very challenging according to Coach Ryan Robinson..
" It’s going to be a tough year especially with the state mandated start date of August 19. Our first game was scheduled for Thursday which was only 10 days ago. We lost seven days of pre- season training and scrimmages," said Coach Robinson. "We had a great 2018 with our team reaching the New York State Class C Final Four where we lost to the state champion 3-1. It’s been pretty frustrating to lose the last three years to the eventual state champion but we are gaining invaluable experience and competitive drive to return every year."
The Jackets need to replace five outstanding seniors in Evan Ruddy, Peyton Chambers, Jesse Lemere, Cody Fobare and Nate Moulton. "You just can’t replace a guy like Nate Moulton who was a goaltender for 4our years starting the last three. He was an All- NAC selection for three years and landed himself on the first team All-New York State team last year. Cody Fobare was just a great team mate that is going to be missed by the whole team. Last year Nate and Cody just played their tails off and left a great legacy with their team mates," said Robinson. Returning are All-NAC Defensive MVP Brennan Harmer, another first team selection in John McCall and two other All-NAC East selections in Nick Burns and Gabe Murphy. Joining them are fellow seniors Cade VanBuren, Lucas Ryan, Joey Greene,Jacob Murphy, Omar Alamoush and Trent Lashua. Juniors Cody Schweinberg, Ethan Bailey, Kyle Stoner, Brody VanBuren and Nick Beldock come off a very successful JV season coached by Quinn Shoen. Sophomores Matthew Robinson and Graham Hill will also be looking to contribute coming from very successful JV seasons that le to them seeing some action in the run to the state finals. "It should be tough year this as we play a combined Class C schedule and Class D east schedule. The guys came into pre-season in really good shape which will help get us into game conditioned level a lot faster. It may take a while to find our style and chemistry but when we do find it and solidify our defense we should be tough," said Coach Robinson.
"When you have a veteran core guys of John McCall (17g/14a), Brennan Harmer, Cade and Brody VanBuren with Nick Burns and Matthew Robinson learning his role as midfielder anything is possible. With Lucas Ryan fully recovered from a knee injury flanked by Gabe Murphy, Will Murphy and Joey Greene that has the makings of a pretty solid defense. Trent Lashua has done great athletic ability so transitioning into the goal keeper should be smooth". "The underclassmen enjoyed so much success with Coach Shoen’s JV program they are ready to step into their roles. It’s going to take a lot of hard work but that’s what the Yellow Jacket program is built on. Hard work and pride," added Coach Robinson.
A 9-2-3 second place finish in the tough NAC East prepared the the Lady Yellowjackets for the postseason where they captured the Section 10 Class C title in a 1-0 victory over Brushton-Moira. The Jackets of Coach Justin Richards took second in divisional play behind 12-1-1 Parishvillle-Hopkinton which went on to win the reach the New York State Class D Final Four.
The Jackets will return a very strong core of seniors in Alexis Sullivan, Jaelynn Uppstrom, Lydia Thomas, Cassidy Hargrave, Maggie Murphy, Anna Brady, Meredith White and Emma Martin. Emma Plumney, an outstanding junior athlete, also returns for
the Jackets. First year varsity players are: Juniors- Keli Kingston and Chloe Tiernan, sophomore Lindsey Burns, Lily Lamere and Laney Tiernan freshman Hailee Blair. "We are looking for solid defense from our fullbacks Maggie Murphy and Anna Brady. Offensively we return a Second Team All-NAC selection in Alexis Sullivan up front with Jaelynn Uppstrom which should be a good combination," said Coach Richards.
"Although we have eight seniors, we're a young team looking to improve andlearn in every game and make a run at the division as well as the Class C Championship."
