M-W Boys Win Season Opener at Jeffers Tournament

POTSDAM - The Madrid-Waddington Boys Soccer season opened with the Yellowjackets earning some high marks after cramming for a final exam.

The Jackets, who are the reigning NAC East Division and Section 10 Class C Champions, downed East Division opponent Norwood-Norfolk 3-1 at the John Jeffers Tournament in Potsdam and will play Malone in the championship game on Wednesday.

Malone blanked host Potsdam 2-0 and other first round tournament action saw Canton fall to host Chazy 4-1 and Chateaugay best Seton Catholic at the Northeastern Clinton Central School Tournament.

In anonleague game reigning NYS Class B champion Westhill blanked Salmon River 3-0. M-W 3 - N-N 1: "Good night tonight I am very happy with how we played tonight. This was our opening league game and essentially a scrimmage all in one tonight. With the start date being a week later we had to cram a lot of training and game prep into eight days," said M-W Coach Ryan Robinson.

"We accomplished all our goals that we put in front of us tonight. We still have a lot to improve on and work on to be competitive in the championship game."

Cody Schweinberg opned the scoring assisted by Brennan Harmer. The second goal came off a direct kick sent in by Lucas Ryan that John McCall sent to Matthew Robinson. Then Matthew Robinson sent a corner kick into the box where Brody VanBuren headed it home. N-N scored in the second half as Keegan Newtown put away a rebound off goal keeper Trent Lashua.

As first year goaltender Trent Lashua had 4 saves and N-N goal Keeper Connor Paige had 15 stops.

Westhill 3 - Salmon River 0: "Great way to start our season against the defending NYSPHSAA Champions.  Always tough to lose, but it was a very fast game like a state tournament game with high intensity.  I felt my center midfielders did a much better job of holding the midfield this time around," said SR Coach Tim Cook.

 "John Miller (9 saves) was great in the net.  Two goals late in the first half made a competitive game appear lopsided. "

In Boys JV Soccer it was Westhill 2, Salmon River 1. Cayde Lazore scored for SR with Collette picking up an assist.

Both SR teams play Friday at 11am at General Brown.  

Malone 2 - Potsdam 0: Alex Hannah scored from Hunter Schumacher in the first half and Schumacher scored from Vonsteinberg in the second half for the Huskies.

Chazy 4 - Canton 1: Andy Downs scored the lone Canton goal on a penalty shot in the first round of the Chazy Tournament.
