M-W, Canton Boys Wins Division Openers

Madrid-Waddington and Canton opened up their NAC Division seasons with boys basketball victories on Thursday night.
M-W (3-0, 1-0 NAC) opened the defense of its NAC East title with a 67-49 win over Brushton-Moira (0-1 NAC) and Canton (1-0 NAC) outscored Massena (1-2, 0-1) 63-45 in the Central Division opener for both teams..
In another NAC East game Tupper Lake downed St. Regis Falls 59-40.
M-W 67 - B-M 49: B-M was able to limit Brennan Harmer's good looks from three-point range but M-W's all-star senior guard adjusted effectively and found lanes to the basket scoring 12 points in the first quarter and 34 points on the night complemented by four assists, seven rebounds and five steals.
Trent Lashua followed with an 18-point, 11-rebound double, four assists and three steals for the Jackets who will play Fonda-Fultonville on Saturday and Galway on Sunday at Fulton-Montgomery Community College in Gloverville.
"Brennan Harmer didn't take a lot of three-pointers but he had a great game and passed the ball very well. Trent Lashua had a tough first half but we talked at halftime and he came back strong," said M-W Coach Aaron Jones.
"We have been working hard on defense and we defended well tonight and did a good job boxing out and communicating. Brushton-Moira has a good team and they will get better. They have some talented guards."
Kyle Stoner scored six points for M-W, Jacob Morgan dropped in four, Sage Cordwell added three points and four rebounds and Cody Schweinberger also grabbed four rebounds. Logan Bassett went 6-7 from the free throw line scoring 18 points for B-M which buried eight 3s but managed only eight two-point field goals, Wayne Palmer and Justin Kennedy each hit two three-pointers scoring seven and six points.
The M-W JVs won the preliminary game 67-25 led by 10 points from Caleb Froats and Tanner Smith and eight points from Luke LePage and Jack Bailey. Wyatt Preve scored 15 points for B-M.
Canton 63 - Massena 45: Andy Downs (8 rebounds) and Ashton Cloce combined for 28 and 21 points leading the Bears who jumped out to a 24-12 first quarter lead. Downs scoreds 11 points in the first quarter and Cloce netted nine on three 3-pointers. Chris Downs, Caleb Bentley Hicks, Jonah Longshore, Zack VanBrocklin and Connor House all added two points,
Chris McGregor delivered 16 points and eight rebounds and Ethan Firnstein netted 13 points with seven rebounds to lead the Massena efforts. Zack LaBarge scored five points and Ethan Barney added four for Massena.
