M-W, Chateaugay Wins Nearing Second Showdown
Madrid-Waddington and Chateaugay both posted boys basketball wins on Wednesday gathering momentum for Tuesday's meeting of NAC East leaders in Chateaugay.
M-W gained an 81-35 division win over St. Regis Falls and climbed to 7-1 in NAC East action and one game behind Chateaugay (9-0) which stayed undefeated on the season with a 59-31 nonleague win over Beekmantown.
Chateaugay won the first meeting of the two teams in M-W.
In other games of the night Harrisville (7-0) downed Edwards-Knox (2-6) 68-43 in an NAC West game and Brushton-Moira (9-4) posted a 63 - 50 nonleague win over Saranac Lake.
In Girls Basket Hermon-DeKalb (7-6) gained a 55-47 nonleague win over LaFargeville and Colton-Pierrepont (3-5) bested Salmon River 38-14 in an NAC East encounter.
M-W 81 - St. Regis 35: The Yellow Jackets bolted out to a 30-7 first quarter lead sparked by Kyle Stoner who drilled two 3-pointers in scoring 13 of his game-high 25 points. Stoner scored 10 points in M-W's 24-point third quarter and enjoyed a 6-8 shooting night which included 4-6 accuracy from 3-point range.
"The guys moved the ball very well," said M-W Coach Aaron Jones.
Drew Harmer also enjoyed a fine shooting night scoring 16 points going 6-10 from the floor and 4-5 from the foul line with four rebounds, five steals and two assists. Trent Lashua scored 10 points with nine rebounds, two assists, four steals and one block and Brennan Harmer (5 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals) scored eight first quarter points and Jacob Murphy also scored eight points.
Nick Beldock tallied two points in an active outing which also included eight assists, four steals and one block and Jacob Morgan also added two points.
Derek Provost buried four 3s scoring 17 points for St. Regis Falls and Cody Reuss and Dawson White also tallied six points.
Chateaugay 59 - Beekmantown 31: Jonah McDonald (10 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, 3 blocks) buried five 3-pointers in the first quarter and went to a very active 35-point effort. Walker Martin tallied 15 points with three 3s and snatched three steals.
Carson Richards tallied four points and Cameron Tracy and Jed McDonald each added three.
"This was a great way to start a really tough stretch. Jonah McDonald came out in the first quarter absolutely on fire. Very happy with our team defense, held a really good team to 31. Jed McDonald had a great floor game and dominated the inside defensively and the boards," said Chateaugay Assistant Coach Jason LaPlante.
"Chase Thomas' energy and defense was great tonight. Walker Martin had another solid game. We are very happy with our energy and how hard these guys played tonight."
