M-W Downs N-N In Duel of NAC East Unbeatens
MADRID - Madrid-Waddington Girls Basketball Coach Bryan Harmer cited his team for outstanding team defense in Thursday's meeting of state-ranked NAC East unbeatens. And the Yellow Jacket offense elevated along with the defense in a 56-17 win over Norwood-Norfolk.
M-W (6-0, 8-3) entered the game ranked 18th in the NYS Sportswriters Class C Poll and N-N (4-1, 4-3) was ranked 20.
"It was a great defensive effort by the entire team. Alexis Sullivan, Jaelynn Uppstrom and Emma Plumley did a nice job running our offensive sets," said M-W Coach Bryan Harmer.
Emma Plumley returned to the court marking the completion of her comeback from a knee injury and subsequent surgery and rehab by scoring 11 points in a winning offense which was led by Alexis Sullivan's 19 points and 11 rebounds and 14 points from Jaelynn Uppstrom who buried four-3 pointers.
She netted two 3s scoring eight points in M-W's 29-7 first quarter lead and buried two 3s in the third quarter where M-W scored 22 unanswered points. Rounding out the M-W scoring were: Laney Tiernan with four and two apiece from Kayla Dinneen, Lydia Thomas, Lily LaMere and Anna Brady.
Kylee Kellison and Brianna Strathen each scored four points for N-N and KJ Belmore, Emma Schiovanee and Caryn Perretta all added three.
In the other East Division games Colton-Pierrepont (3-3, 4-7) downed Parishville-Hopkinton (1-4, 1-8) 40-25 and Brushton-Moira (1-5, 1-9) downed Tupper Lake (0-7, 1-10) 44-30.
C-P 43 - P-H 25: The Colts took control with an 18-5 second quarter run and Lizzy Vaccaro led the way with 11 points followed by Emma Clemmo with 10 and Landree Chamberlain with eight. Other scoring came from: Alexis Cuthbert (2), Amber Erwin (2), Kayleigh Jacot (4), Kiana Hogle (4) and Callie Richards (2).
Kelly Bloom led P-H with 8, MaryGrace Guinney netted five, Emma Bloom and Autumn MacWilliams added four and Navean Phillips and Brenna Woods each chipped in with two.
