Madrid's Mayette To Help Lead Roos Hockey

CANTON – The SUNY Canton men’s hockey team features 30 student-athletes as it consists of 20 returners coupled with 10 new players. The Roos open the season on the road at Wilkes University and Utica College on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The team will host NCAA Division II St. Michael’s College in the team’s home-opener on Tuesday (11/5) at 7 p.m. in the Roos House. SUNY Canton will then travel to SUNY Geneseo on November 9th, who is ranked No. 3 nationally in United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III Poll.  The next weekend sees the Roos play a home-and-home series with Skidmore College. SUNY Canton will host Alumni Night on November 23rd where they will retire former player Cory Bercume’s jersey. The Roos lose their top scorer from last season but return five of their top six and seven double digit point scorers from a season ago. Sean David (10-10-20), Tyson Bruce (7-12-19), Jake Mayette (8-8-16) of Madrid and Kyler Matthews (6-10-16) led the way offensively. Max Routledge (4-9-13), Adam Petric (8-3-11) and Sean Shepard (2-8-10) also contributed double digit points during 2018-19.

The team returns both its goaltenders who saw a majority of the action last season in seniors Michael Cerasuolo and Austin Washkurak. Cerasuolo posted a 10-3-2 record with a 2.84 goals against average and .911 save percentage last season, while Washkurak tallied marks of 4-6-0, 3.17 and .880.

The 2019-20 Roos will be captained by senior Luke Hincenbergs in addition to assistant captains Jake Mayette (junior) of Madrid and Sean Shepard (sophomore).

SUNY Canton welcomes 10 newcomers to the roster including a sophomore Division I transfer from the University of Connecticut, two junior transfers from Division III Oswego State, a sophomore (academically) that sat out last season, and six freshmen. The new student-athletes feature six forwards, three defensemen and a goaltender.
