McCormick Honored Then Excels Vs St. John's
AMHERST, Mass. – University of University of Massachusetts hockey freshman Cal Kiefiuk, men's swimming and diving senior Al Madden, and women's basketball junior Paige McCormick were named the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week presented by UMassFive College Credit Union on Tuesday morning. The trio will be honored at the next weekly luncheon on Wednesday, Dec. 4. Wednesday, Dec. 4. McCormick , a Heuvelton Central School graduate, tied a career-high with 18 points in the win over Brown on Thursday, shooting 6-of-10 from the field and 4-of-7 from three-point land. The junior also pulled down seven rebounds, contributed one assist with just one turnover in 29 minutes of action.
Massachusetts tied a single-game program record and set the top mark against Division I opponents with 17 made three-pointers against Brown as the Minutewomen capped off a streak of three straight wins by an average of 31.7 points per game.
McCormick, who led Heuvelton to three straight New York State Class D Championships, followed up her performance against Brown with a near-perfect shooting effort against Srt. John's University. UMass cut an early deficit down to single digits in the fourth quarter, but a hard-fought battle came up just short as the Minutewomen fell to St. John's, 82-71, on Monday night at Carnesecca Arena. The loss ends a three-game winning streak for Massachusetts, which is now 3-3, and the Red Storm improve to 4-1.
McCormick scored 15 points on 5-6 shooting which included 3-3 accuracy from three-point range and going 2-2 from the foul line. She also grabbed seven rebounds and committed only one turnover while playing a team high 37 minutes.
Junior Bre Hampton-Bey led the Minutewomen in the scoring column with a season-high 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting, sophomore Destiney Philoxy pouring in 14 and freshman Angelique Ngalakulondi rounding out the double-figure efforts with 11 points.
UMass will play at the University of Vermont on Friday in a game televised on ESPN 3.
