McMaster drills 16 Kills For Roos In Loss to Potsdam
CANTON – Melissa McMaster recorded a match-high 16 kills and six blocks but the SUNY Canton women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-27, 21-25) decision to visiting SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Potsdam jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the opener before four straight points from the hosts tied it at eight apiece. Canton led 16-15 after a Sydney Uthe service ace but the Bears pulled away late, 25-21.The second set saw the Bears roar out to a 9-3 lead and open a 12-6 advantage. However, the Roos received a big boost from their home crowd rattling off eight straight points that included an ace from Ashton Houppert and kills from Tatum Lafrance, Camryn Smeatin and McMaster. Leading 21-19 the hosts scored four of the final five points culminating in a kill from Lafrance for the 25-21 win.The Roos jumped out to a quick 10-4 lead and Canton led 22-18 late in the third. The Bears produced four consecutive points to draw even at 22 all and scored the final three points of the set with kills from Mikayla Myers and a Canton attacking error to take the third set, 27-25.The fourth frame was another back-and-forth battle that was deadlocked at 19 apiece before the Bears tallied six of the last eight points.McMaster’s 16 kills are just one shy of her career-high which she posted during her freshman season v. Southern Vermont College. Her hitting percentage was impressive as she finished at a .560 rate with 16 kills and just two errors (16-2-25).Marissa Ixtlahuac chipped in with nine kills, while Taum Lafrance and Camryn Smeatin totaled five apiece.Ashton Houppert assisted 34 kills and added a team-high 11 digs defensively. Jenna Roat and Skye Hansen recorded 10 digs apiece, while Syndey Uthe and Peyton Nadeau pinpointed four and three aces, respectively.
