Mechanicville Reverses Lady Bears In Regional

SARATOGA - In the opening minutes of Tuesday's Class B Girls Baseball Regional Semi-final game at Saratoga Springs High School both Canton and Mechanicville labored extensively to score inside.

But the finishes came with more frequently after the four minute mark and Section 2 Champion Mechanicville took a 14-10 first quarter lead and methodically outscored Canton in three of four quarters to gain a 58-43 victory. The Raiders earned a trip to Beekmantown High School on Friday to play Section 7 Champion Northeastern Clinton for a berth in the New York State Final Four.

The Raiders (20-3) also reversed a 58-57 loss to Canton in the final seconds of last year's regional finals in a contest where the two teams matched tenacious pressure defense and all-out dedication to possess every rebound.

"It was a tough loss for the Bears but we were just outplayed tonight," said Canton Coach Jim DiSalvo whose Lady Bears finished at 21-4 as two-time Section 10 Overall Champions with six straight Section 10 Class B titles.

Charlie Goversky and Jada Brown each scored five points and Chloe Goversky netted four in the Raiders 16-9 advantage in the second quarter and Charli Goversky followed with 11 of her game-high 21 points in the third quarter where the two teams matched 15 points.

Jada Brown tallied 11 points and AJ Joseph came through with a high impact 10-point, 14-rebound double-double with six points as the Raiders closed out the victory in the fourth quarter. Chloe Goversky and Amy Disiena (6 rebounds) each tallied six points and Gianna Cavotta added four.

Emily Wentworth established herself immediately as a force inside for Canton and tallied a team-high 14 points with seven rebounds. Sarah Sieminski (6 rebounds), Lexi Huiatt (5 rebounds) and Katie Chisholm (2 rebounds, 2 steals) followed with nine, eight and seven points. Gretchen Warner (3 rebounds) and Ester Shipman added three and two points and Maddie Hoy grabbed three rebounds.

The contest ended the careers of eight Canton seniors who have have been part of the Bears' run of league and sectional titles and a regional title: Katie Chisholm, Sarah Sieminski, Jilly DiSalvo, Sophie Ladouceur, Abbie Dent, Mary Lobdell, Gretchen Warner and Kelsea Whittier.
