Minor Hockey Bantams, Pee Wee Make Stakes
BY DAVE SHEA
The Pee Wee and Bantam Bs of the Ogdensburg Minor Hockey Association were among so many teams in several sports who were denied a chance to play for a state championship because of the Covid-19 virus. Last week all state and national championships in the United States Youth Hockey Association were cancelled.
Both Ogdensburg Leafs teams climaxed outstanding seasons by qualifying for the New York State Hockey Championships in Buffalo to represent the Northern Zone.
The Bantams qualifying first by posting the best record in a home and home matchups with the other teams in the Northern Zone.
The Pee Wees qualified second after taking East Division honors with a 5-4 win over Salmon River. The Ogdensburg Leafs then played West Division leader Chazy for the top qualifying spot and lost a 10-8 scorefest. The Pee Wees are coached by Craig Thornhill, Matt Morley and Paul O'Donnell.
In the 5-4 win over Salmon River Tegan Frederick and Tyler Sovie scored a goal with an assist and Laughlin O'Donnell, Jackson Thornhill and Camden Griffith also scored. Austin Thornhill also passed out an assist to the support of Kaden Bogart's goaltending.
In the overall championship game Chazy turned back an outstanding effort by the Leafs with an empty net goal in the final minute. Tegan Frederick scored four goals with one assist and Laughlin O'Donnell scored three times. Nathan Irvine also scored and Camden Griffith added an assist.
Quinn Brandell led Chazy with four goals and one assist.
Other members of the Ogdensburg team are: Brooks Garvey, Christopher Jacobs, Hayden McDonald, Aidan Moran, Jack Morley, Aiden O'Neil, Rocco Testani and Jackson Thornhill.
