Mitchell, Porter NCAA Bound With Ithaca, St. John Fisher
TROY, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's basketball secured its first conference championship since 2013 as the Bombers defeated top-seeded Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 80-69, in overtime of the Liberty League championship game at the ECAV Center on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, which extends the winning streak to 13 games, Ithaca improves to 23-5 on the season and will earn the Liberty League's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Ithaca College men's basketball team (23-5) will be making its first appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship in seven years, and the Bombers will face off against No. 25 Babson College (20-6) in the opening round. Ithaca is set to travel to No. 1 Swarthmore College (26-1) in Swarthmore, Pa. and the host Garnet will take on Brooklyn College in the first round. . The last time Ithaca reached the NCAA Tournament in 2012-13, the Bombers advanced to the Sweet 16.
Potsdam's Jake Mitchell will be enjoying the NCAA experience after returning from injury to be a season-long starter for the Bombers.
Season highs for Mitchell are 14 points four rebounds and three assists against Cortland (11/19).. 13 points and four rebounds against Rochester (12/10)...11 points against Moravian (1/4)... 10 points and five rebounds against RIT (1/14).. Matched season high 14 points against Wells College (1/28) and matched his season high twice with 14 points and 4 rebounds against both Skidmore (2/1) and RPI (2/9).
Ithaca went 3-3 against the NCAA Tournament field this season – all Liberty League games. The Bombers were 2-1 against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and 1-2 against Hobart.
Canton's Louden Porter will also represent Section 10 in the NCAA Division III Tournament playing for St. John Fisher. PORTER, SJF HEADED TO OHIO FOR REGIONAL
PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's and women's basketball teams learned their postseason fates as the NCAA released the 2019-20 Championship Field on Monday afternoon as part of its official selection show. On the men's side, Fisher won its ninth Empire 8 title over the weekend after orchestrating a 20-point comeback to down its rival, Nazareth College. The Cardinals, who will be making their 17th NCAA appearance, are set to take on No. 25 York College of Pennsylvania at 5 p.m. on Friday in Alliance Ohio as Mount Union will host the First and Second round matchups. The host Purple Raiders will duke it out with Cairn in the night's other First Round contest.
Canton's Louden Porter did not play in the conference tournament but earned regular playing time over the course of the season. Season highs for the junior guard came in a 15-point effort on 3-4 3-point shooting outing and 11 points against Alfred.
