OBGC Thanks Community For 'Doing What It Takes'
Updated: Apr 2
Three weeks ago on March 12th the Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club canceled what was scheduled to be our 44 th Expo. Our Board of Directors, Volunteers and Staff had been working on the event since September and were looking forward to another great weekend and raising money for the club.
The event generally nets about $90,000 for the OBGC, close to a quarter of the clubs just over $400,000 operating budget for the year. With the safety of all in mind and not knowing what the future would hold canceling the event was really our only choice. A big part of the event is selling the $10 Expo raffle tickets with the weekend event a time we usually sell a lot of tickets and seeing we had about 800-900 tickets left the prospects of selling all the tickets looked rather bleak. Since 1964 the Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club has been impacting and changing lives. Afternoon attendance at the club has never been better and how the community and club friends, alumni and supporters came together to help us was simply amazing and a testament to a community that really cares about the lives of the children in it.
A facebook donate opportunity circulated by Kim Bell raised $6165 with another facebook page raising $510, young club alumni who really never donated much before went the social media route and donations from them totaled $2165, local restaurants organized fundraisers, a group of sports fans who suddenly had no golf, baseball or college basketball to watch made donations totaling $3150, Expo exhibitors and crafters donated all or part of their Expo space fee back, members of IAABO #47 Boys Basketball Officials bought $1500 worth of $10 raffle tickets which helped us sell all 4250 tickets, the selling of No-Expo shirts raised $1400 and donations came from so many friends and supporters and continue to come daily. We won’t get to the $90,000 net but all the support we have received certainly takes a lot of the sting out of it Currently, the OBGC is closed for operating but we are working with the Ogdensburg City School District and are delivering 110 lunches daily to families. We have also delivered dinner and breakfast donated by local restaurants and additional food when we have it available to help support our members and their families.
We can’t wait until our members are back at the club daily and we are hearing the sound of many children living life as they should. On behalf of our Board of Directors, Volunteers and Staff we would like to thank you all for all your efforts and support through this difficult time. The Boys and Girls Club slogan now is “Whatever it Takes” and we are so fortunate to live in a community that does “Whatever it Takes “ to help their youth.
