OFA Begins Online Signups For Winter Sports Season

Although Section 10 Athletics are "on pause" as the COVID-19 pandemics evolve Ogdensburg Free Academy like schools all over New York State are currently preparing for the winter season which is tenatively scheduled to begin on Jan. 4 under directives from the New York State Public High School Athletic Assocation.

The OFA 2020-2021 Winter Sports Season online registration/sign-ups will be open from Tuesday, December 1 through Thursday, December 31. Any student-athlete in grades 7-12, who wishes to participate on an athletic team this coming sports season, is invited to register. "Although we're making every effort to proceed with business as "usual" during these unprecedented times, the ever-evolving fluidity of events and decisions being made, which are out of our control, makes future planning uncertain. However, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) announced that the Winter Sports Season start date, for "high-risk" winter sports (basketball, competitive cheer, ice hockey, and wrestling) is Monday, January 4, 2021. Please understand that this start date is tentative," said OFA Athletic Director Tony Bjork.

"Unfortunately, due to these ever-changing uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic, the “high-risk” start date is contingent upon authorization from state officials. Until authorization is granted by state officials, NYSPHSAA member schools are not permitted to participate in sports determined to be "high-risk" by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH)."

Sports Program, Levels Offered Sport programs and leveled offered in the winter season follow.

Basketball for Boys and Girls at the Varsity, JV, Modified (8th) & Modified (7th)

levels. Cheerleading at the Varsity level.

Boys Ice Hockey at the Varsity level and Girls Hockey at the Varsity level through a merger with Canton.

Physical Examinations

Student-athletes in Grades 7-12 registering for OFA Interscholastic Athletics must have a current physical examination on file with the OFA Health Office before the student is authorized to participate in practice/tryouts. (Physicals are valid for 1 year from the date of the last exam.)

Please upload the new "physical" file during Step 4 of the registration process. If you have a current physical on-file with the District, the OFA Nurses will enter your physical date from the District's medical records; you will not need to upload a "physical" file during the registration process. If your physical date has expired or will soon expire, you will be notified by the OFA Health Office.

Student athletes who have not previously had a health examination must obtain a health examination and provide a health history ("Required NYS School Health Examination Form") completed and signed by the parent/guardian, prior to participation in the Winter 2020 sports season.

**The district has the right to update/change/modify any policies and/or procedures within the activity registration. If changes are made, parents will be notified.
