OFA/SMA Hall: LeBeau Excelled In Pool, Life
BY DAVE SHEA
Ogdensburg Free Academy dropped its Boys Swimming team in middle 1970s.
Memories of the program were brought back to life when Bob LeBeau was inducted as a member the second class of the Ogdensburg Free Academy/St. Mary's Academy Sports Hall of Fame on Sept. 27.
As member of OFA's Class of 1973, LeBeau won Section 10 Championships in all of his four seasons on the swimming team and earned All-Northern League honors in football as a senior. He also competed in track-field for two years and received the WSLB Trophy as the Outstanding Senior Student-Athlete in 1973.
He earned an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy where he made the lacrosse team as a walk-on and played three years as long-stick defenseman. He went on to a 20 plus year career as a Scientist/Engineer for the Air Force Research Laboratory.
"I want to thank the committee and I want to thank the teachers and coaches at OFA for providing me a great start to my adult life," said LeBeau at his induction.
"I came from the Fourth Ward and did pretty well in swimming where my best races were the 100 freestyle and the backstroke. I did pretty well and in lacrosse at the Air Force Academy considering I had never played the game. I have a lot to be thankful for," said LeBeau.
