Phelan, Gusway Join SLU Football, Volleyball Staffs
CANTON _ Michael Phelan '15 and Carter Gusway have joined the St. Lawrence University football staff as graduate assistant coaches, and Jimmy Cerf has been promoted from a GA role to a full-time position as the passing game coordinator and recruiting coordinator.
A defensive back for St. Lawrence, Phelan was part of a Saints' defense that led the nation in team passing efficiency defense as a senior in 2014. He also helped St. Lawrence attain a top-10 national ranking in total defense, turnover margin and scoring defense. He spent the last two years as a wide receivers coach at Castleton University and will be coaching safeties for the Saints this fall.
Gusway is also familiar with the St. Lawrence football program after spending last season as a student intern, coaching thecornerbacks and assisting in other areas with the defense. A 2019 graduate of the University of Regina, Gusway will be working with the wide receivers this fall.
Cerf, who joined the coaching staff as the wide receivers coach last season, helped the Saints shatter program records for completions (256) and passing yards (2,909). Anthony Ferraro earned First-Team All-Liberty League honors as a wide receiver last season, and Travis Marnell was a First-Team CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.
"I'm really excited about the makeup of this year's staff," said head coach Dan Puckhaber. "This year marked the first time in four years that when we had our first staff meeting, I didn't have to give anyone directions around campus. All of our coaches have spent quality time with us either as coaches in previous seasons, as student-athletes or interns."
The Saints will open preseason camp with their first practice on Thursday. The team will open the 2019 season at 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 7 at Utica.
Dignan Joins Volleyball Staff
Meredith Dignan has joined the St. Lawrence University volleyball coaching staff as a graduate assistant coach.
Dignan, a 2019 SUNY New Paltz graduate, was a First-Team All-SUNYAC selection and AVCA All-Region setter for the Hawks last year. She also excelled in the classroom, earning a spot on the SUNYAC Commissioner's Honor Roll and the All-CAA Academic Team.
She brings several years of experience to the position, having served as the head coach for the APEX Volleyball Club's U14 team in Poughkeepsie for two years. She also organized and ran a two-week volleyball clinic for kids from third to eighth grade, and was an assistant coach at Masters Volleyball Academy in Baltimore for a year and a half.
“I’m very excited to welcome Meredith onto our coaching staff," said head coach Shelly Roiger. "She brings a great deal of positive energy and technical knowledge to our staff. Meredith had a tremendous career and she knows what it takes to commit to excellence, put others needs in front of your own, and what it takes to help athletes develop holistically. I believes she’s a tremendous match for our program’s philosophy and she will instantly make a positive impact in our program.”
The volleyball team's first practice will be held on Saturday, and the team will open the season with four matches at the Red Dragon Classic at SUNY Cortland on August 30-31.
