Raiders Prevail In High Quality Lax Duel Vs OFA
OFA entered Friday's NAC Boys Lacrosse game with Massena looking for a victory to build on in the final stage of the the regular season.
They fell just short of the win dropping a 6-5 decision to Raider squad which bested the Devils 18-6 earlier this week. But Devil coach Andy Roddy feels that the quality of the team effort could definitely provide impetus for a strong finish.
"For sure we hope to carry that (effort) into the rest of the season," said Coach Roddy.
"All together the boys played an outstanding game and should be proud of what they were able to do and bounce back from the last time we played Massena."
Both teams played with excellent discipline on offense, kept their shape on defense, both goalies provided stellar outings and the Raiders prevailed with a huge clutch-time save by goalie Mike Benedict ,who finished with 14 stops, and then a fast break goal with 20 seconds to play.
Eli Bullock continued as a role model of energy and efficiency for the young OFA attackmen scoring three goals. Keighan Sias and Dylan Irvine each scored one goal and one assist, Tegan Frederick passed out two assists and Drew Costello added one assist to the support of Alex Worden's eight saves in goal.
The Raiders were sparked by three-point efforts from Ryan Letham (2 goals, 1 assist), Tehokwirathe Barrier (3 assists) and Takaronniotakie Thompson (3 goals). Luke Brochetti netted a single goal. "They played their hearts out today. They deserved that win today but we came up short late in the game on a fast break and Massena capitalized on it. The fellas battled right up until the clock went off and played great by slowing the game down and keeping possession. It kept our guys fresh and still in it by the end of the game," said Coach Ruddy.
"Alex Worden had an outstanding day in net and clearing the ball. The defense of Logan Horton, Griffin Wert, Trent Sargent and Holden Woods played aggressive and held Massena to a low scoring game and held their top players pointless in the game. The offense of Keighan Sias, Chase Jacobs, Tegan Frederick, Eli Bullock, Drew Costello, Dylan Irvine, Brady Bullock and Theodore Hewko played very disciplined and didn't turn the ball over often today. They were able to to rotate the ball around and keep possession to help and keep our defense from getting tired."
In one other game played Friday St. Lawrence Central downed Plattsburgh High School 14-2.
SLC 14 - Plattsburgh 2: Mason Frary led the St. Lawrence offense with four goals and two assists. Jayden Ashley added three goals and a pair of assists and Alex Burg also struck for three goals. Charlie Dow (2 assists), Connor Foster, Gabe Hornung and Damen Olson scored scored. Matt Smith made five saves in net. Preston Daniels scored both goals for the Hornets.
